Speaker 1: Can you start a podcast with me?
Speaker 2: Please?
Speaker 1: I need something to do.
Speaker 3: I Jack, sending out a trouble bock of this says.
Speaker 1: To last, here's a chance, popta right down with goalie scars.
Speaker 3: Oh my one a move by the rookie too.
Speaker 1: On one faster not moving in Marsha get it?
Speaker 3: Jet Own Oil dances in podcast. Wait at home, right
Speaker 3: way corner, paster Chester.
Speaker 1: What is that for?
Speaker 3: Most?
Speaker 1: Welcome in everyone to another episode of Ruins Tape to tape.
Speaker 1: I'm your host this evening, Caroline with a K. It
Speaker 1: is Jun twenty fifth, and I'm here with my fantastic
Speaker 1: co host, Maria from Watertown. Hey Maria, Hello, Hello.
Speaker 4: The month of June is flying by, and I am
Speaker 4: three days away from official retirement land.
Speaker 1: Hooray. The senioritis must be so bad.
Speaker 4: Yes, oh, you can't even imagine right now. I haven't
Speaker 4: fully I have not fully checked out, but it is
Speaker 4: it is creeping creeping up on me.
Speaker 1: Oh my goodness. Well, hopefully in a couple of days
Speaker 1: we'll have plenty to celebrate, not just you, but also
Speaker 1: free agency.
Speaker 2: Free agency.
Speaker 1: But until then, yes, until now, to tell her, yes,
Speaker 1: we are here to talk about more of our trade
Speaker 1: deadline acquisitions. This week we are talking about Henry Yoki.
Speaker 1: How are you who was essentially brought to Boston. Uh,
Speaker 1: not really with a trade. I don't think that Buffalo
Speaker 1: really got anything. He just wanted out, and quite frankly,
Speaker 1: we don't blame him. So this twenty five year old
Speaker 1: right handed d was drafted actually by Chicago back in
Speaker 1: twenty seventeen in the first round, twenty ninth overall, which
Speaker 1: is a little surprising. Last season he played sixty games
Speaker 1: and he had three goals, seven assists, ten points and
Speaker 1: shockingly a plus thirteen. He also on the Buffalo Sabers.
Speaker 4: I know, and again you know what farvie for us
Speaker 4: to be throwing shots at any other organization right now?
Speaker 4: After the season, Ruins had.
Speaker 1: God and he had a coursey for percentage of fifty
Speaker 1: one point four. So he was shooting a little bit
Speaker 1: more often than not, which is again something that we
Speaker 1: could not say for a lot of players on our team.
Speaker 1: But interestingly enough, so again in the last few episodes,
Speaker 1: we've talked about one of my favorite statistics, the individual
Speaker 1: points percentage. But when it comes to defenceman, I like
Speaker 1: to then shift my focus to defensive point shares the DPS,
Speaker 1: and this is a statistic that effectively measures a player's
Speaker 1: defensive play. It estimates the number of team points contributed
Speaker 1: by that player. In this particular season, he actually had
Speaker 1: a fairly solid defensive contribution in Buffalo. So out of
Speaker 1: all of his games, he had a defensive points share
Speaker 1: of one point five in Boston and one point three
Speaker 1: in or no, I'm sorry, one point five in Buffalo
Speaker 1: and one point three in Boston. So what the heck
Speaker 1: does this mean and why should you care? Comparing him
Speaker 1: to let's say, Charlie McAvoy, he played only fifty games
Speaker 1: this past season because of his injury, and he had
Speaker 1: a two point five DPS, which means he had a
Speaker 1: really high impact in fewer games. Zadorov played eighty one
Speaker 1: games and he had a five point five whoa, which
Speaker 1: was pretty crazy, you know. For I mean, I look
Speaker 1: forward to later this summer when we do another review
Speaker 1: of Nikita Zadorov, because I think he was a little
Speaker 1: bit of a dark horse, a little bit of a
Speaker 1: sleeper cell, you know.
Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, yeah, he gave himself a bit of
Speaker 4: a bad rapped our face value.
Speaker 1: Yeah, so he's gonna be He's gonna be when we're
Speaker 1: gonna talk about more. But a lot of the other players,
Speaker 1: a lot of the other defensemen on the team. You know,
Speaker 1: you're looking at again Charlie mcavoyd two point five, Brandon
Speaker 1: Carlow two point seven, Andrew Peak two point three, Mason
Speaker 1: Laura one point one. But you know, he's he's the baby.
Speaker 1: And essentially, as I mentioned, it's an indicator of, you know,
Speaker 1: how they are contributing defensively, and so, Yoki, how are
Speaker 1: you being a player that again came into a difficult
Speaker 1: situation in Boston, didn't really know what the heck was
Speaker 1: going on his motivations for going to Boston, you know,
Speaker 1: I mean, I'm not putting words in his mouth, but
Speaker 1: the fact that he wanted to get the hell out
Speaker 1: of a dodge huffalo. I mean, is Boston the place
Speaker 1: that he really wanted to or should have landed to
Speaker 1: be determin The biggest issue is that he is also
Speaker 1: being twenty five years old and RFA with arbitration rights,
Speaker 1: so again Boston is not obligated to give him a
Speaker 1: qualifying offer, and without knowing the bigger picture and the plans,
Speaker 1: it's harder to tell what Boston wants to do with
Speaker 1: this particular player qualifying offers much with them if.
Speaker 4: He's expected more than three million dollars, I'll tell you that.
Speaker 1: Yeah. So here's the other thing, is the qualifying offers
Speaker 1: and arbitration and all that kind of stuff happens. Those
Speaker 1: are all do a little bit later in the month
Speaker 1: of July. So who knows if Don and company are
Speaker 1: going to wait and see where everything else lands to
Speaker 1: kind of deal with him and figure that out. But
Speaker 1: you bring up an excellent point, which is he is
Speaker 1: coming to the end of his third professional contract. He's
Speaker 1: had four years worth of contracts, two contracts total in Buffalo.
Speaker 1: His first contract was a three year with a value
Speaker 1: of seven point five million dollars, so that's a two
Speaker 1: point five million cap hit AAV and then he had
Speaker 1: a one year deal that was signed for three point
Speaker 1: one million dollars. Now, again, sample size being what it
Speaker 1: was tiny, lots of external factors going on. But Maria,
Speaker 1: what's your opinion on Henry Yoki? Are you.
Speaker 4: So? My opinion about defense in general is you can
Speaker 4: never have enough defensive depth. Yes, However, with some of
Speaker 4: the other needs that you have, I'm not sure that
Speaker 4: you are in a position to Again, I'm assuming that
Speaker 4: this player is going to anticipate or expect more money,
Speaker 4: right and I know that the cap is going up,
Speaker 4: but you need to utilize that money wisely to address
Speaker 4: needs that.
Speaker 2: You have so that your rebuild.
Speaker 4: Moves on a faster track than likely what you may
Speaker 4: want it to be. And I don't see how this
Speaker 4: player fits in to those plans.
Speaker 1: Right right, if it there is even any kind of
Speaker 1: particular motivation to even stay in Boston. Now, granted, he
Speaker 1: can't just up and leave Boston. The only way that
Speaker 1: he's leaving is if Boston chooses not to give him
Speaker 1: an offer. But to your point, Boston needs always has needed,
Speaker 1: any team always has needed, you know, those extra defencemen
Speaker 1: right so another.
Speaker 4: And I don't want to say those are because because
Speaker 4: they're not a dime a dozen, No, no, no, but
Speaker 4: you those in other avenues that might not be as expensive. Now,
Speaker 4: if you're telling me that you think this guy might
Speaker 4: be able to like have a higher threshold than Mason
Speaker 4: Lauri or Push Laurai, how much is that worth to you?
Speaker 1: Right? Well, and Boston already has a defenseman who is
Speaker 1: I mean well again, small sample size but at first glance,
Speaker 1: is he truly this that different from Yoki? How are you?
Speaker 1: And I'm talking about Parker Waltherspoon. You know he had
Speaker 1: a DPS this season of one point four. He had
Speaker 1: a two last year, So when he's out there, he's
Speaker 1: doing his job right. Wiltherspoon played fifty five games this
Speaker 1: past season, he played forty one this season before, and
Speaker 1: he's gonna be a lot more affordable than Yoki.
Speaker 2: How are you?
Speaker 1: So?
Speaker 2: You know, what is your investment in this team?
Speaker 4: It's it, you know, it'd be one thing if you had,
Speaker 4: you know, acquired this player in a tree where you
Speaker 4: gave an asset to get this player.
Speaker 2: But doesn't appear to be the case.
Speaker 1: All right, Bruins fans, if you're thinking about picking up
Speaker 1: some new gear, now's the time. I'm already planning to
Speaker 1: grab a fresh poster NOC jersey this fall. Who knows,
Speaker 1: maybe he's rocking a new letter on the front. The

Speaker 4: You have other needs and you can find yourself that
Speaker 4: utility defenceman m h in a more economical manner, right,
Speaker 4: because I can't imagine he's gonna want he's I mean,
Speaker 4: I would assume his agent's not going to say to him, listen,
Speaker 4: you can't take less money than what you made last year. Right,
Speaker 4: that's just not not it's not good business. Right, It's
Speaker 4: just not good business. But again, you know how much
Speaker 4: because our expectation is that the Bruins are going to
Speaker 4: do something of significance.
Speaker 2: Right. In order to do that, you need to have
Speaker 2: the money to do that.
Speaker 1: Yeah, right, And so again comparing Yoki Haru to Waterspoon,
Speaker 1: Waterspoon makes league minimum. He currently makes eight hundred thousand
Speaker 1: on his one year contract. You know, do you do
Speaker 1: you do you pursue someone like that again, who's probably
Speaker 1: a defensive version of a journeyman. Right, And you know what, the.
Speaker 4: Defense on this team is the least of your worries
Speaker 4: because if you can't no, I mean, sad statement to make,
Speaker 4: but it's the least of your worries because you know,
Speaker 4: you get back a healthy Hampisling home. Yeah, a healthy
Speaker 4: Charlie McAvoy, I mean, Mason Laurai, he's got to take
Speaker 4: a turn for the better. He finished, you know, finished
Speaker 4: the season pretty miserably. But I still think that there's
Speaker 4: upside to this kid. Again with the right the right
Speaker 4: structure and the right coaching, Zadorov, he finished the season
Speaker 4: a lot stronger, I think than any of us expected him, yeah,
Speaker 4: to finish the season. So I think you're in good
Speaker 4: shape right defensively, right, So I mean, Swayman's going to
Speaker 4: be better, right, swaymen, we going to be better?
Speaker 1: Yes, So you know, and when I when I bring
Speaker 1: up Parker Waterspoon, I'm not necessarily straight up saying that
Speaker 1: the two of them are exactly the same. You know,
Speaker 1: copy paste insert copy players right, So again keeping in mind,
Speaker 1: uh Waterspoon, he had a goal and six assists, but
Speaker 1: he was a minus ten. But again, we know again,
Speaker 1: I know every.
Speaker 4: Everyone, everybody was exposed. We yes said it in a
Speaker 4: prior episode. Everyone on the team was pretty well exposed
Speaker 4: unless your name was David Pasternak or Morgan geeky.
Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, and you know the Bruins defense.
Speaker 4: Uh. And let's not think a card too with this
Speaker 4: money aspect. Is why I see I said, like, Yoki,
Speaker 4: how how are you as being kind of like thanks
Speaker 4: for stopping in.
Speaker 2: Is right, You've got to pay Morgan geeky something.
Speaker 1: Right, you know. I also kind of wonder if Boston
Speaker 1: agreeing to take Yoki Haru was them taking a flyer
Speaker 1: on him, and they're gonna think about whether or not
Speaker 1: he's worth continuing a deal. I mean that at the
Speaker 1: end of the day, it's it's gonna be a money thing.
Speaker 1: I think it's definitely this is this.
Speaker 4: Is one that I think, you know, we can both
Speaker 4: say this is definitely going to be a money issue decision.
Speaker 1: Yeah. He is the only one that if you know,
Speaker 1: he's not put in a trade package, which, again, with
Speaker 1: the exception of all of the guys that we've talked
Speaker 1: about in this particular series, I'm not particularly attached to
Speaker 1: any of them except for Lauco, but again that's because
Speaker 1: he was part of the team before. Without that history. Yeah,
Speaker 1: probably all of them i'd be like, all right, well
Speaker 1: it is what it is because they're new what have you.
Speaker 1: But he's one that I think Boston could walk away from.
Speaker 1: He's the only one I agree with you, yeah, that
Speaker 1: this is this is not gonna go great no for him.
Speaker 2: And again, you know, none of the players that we
Speaker 2: have been.
Speaker 4: I'm doing these segments on are going to bring you
Speaker 4: back to the promised slant. Okay now, and I think
Speaker 4: you know, our listeners and viewers are savvy enough to
Speaker 4: know that and to figure that out.
Speaker 2: That's not what we're saying here.
Speaker 4: However, in this instance, I think, because you are in
Speaker 4: decent shape defensively as an organization, that you can move
Speaker 4: on from this player if said player is looking to
Speaker 4: get a payday or a higher pay day, which I
Speaker 4: think it would be.
Speaker 2: An overpay in my view.
Speaker 1: Yeah, again, it's it's it's so difficult to evaluate a
Speaker 1: lot of these guys that came in for the last
Speaker 1: twenty games. I mean, you would think with twenty games
Speaker 1: that should be enough of a sample size. I mean,
Speaker 1: you know it's a it's a reasonable fraction of the season.
Speaker 2: But but I.
Speaker 4: Think when you were growing, things went off the rails
Speaker 4: so quickly. And you know, I don't like to use
Speaker 4: the word tank in any way, shape or form about
Speaker 4: any pro athletes because I just don't think it's in
Speaker 4: their their DNA.
Speaker 2: But was there a bit.
Speaker 4: Of some quick factor in there? Yeah, likely there was.
Speaker 4: I would I would be frustrated. So I mean emotionally,
Speaker 4: So I think it's really hard for anybody in the organization,
Speaker 4: you know, other than those players that you've identify as
Speaker 4: your core players, which right now are David Pasternak mm h,
Speaker 4: Charlie McAvoy, Jeremy Swayman. Although we did hear an interesting
Speaker 4: tidbit and Jeremy Swayman that the Edmonton Oilers had actually
Speaker 4: made an inquiry about Jeremy Swayman even after he signed
Speaker 4: his new contract, and I wonder how much of that
Speaker 4: had to do with the fact that the Oilers might
Speaker 4: have been a little bit worried about how Skinner would
Speaker 4: hold up during their playoff run.
Speaker 2: Yeah, but.
Speaker 1: Which actually without naming the team, was brought up by
Speaker 1: Elliott Friedman a couple of weeks ago in a pot
Speaker 1: Yes he did it, So I do believe that that
Speaker 1: is a factual statement.
Speaker 4: M m. But you know, again, this might be one
Speaker 4: of the he he he may end up being a
Speaker 4: bit of a casualty whether or not he has his
Speaker 4: heart set on staying in Boston. I don't know that,
Speaker 4: you know, when you have to make roster decisions and
Speaker 4: financial decisions, I'm not sure that this would be a
Speaker 4: good decision. Yeah, the Bruins to make to provide him
Speaker 4: with an offer.
Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, so he's the one also we kind of
Speaker 1: have the least opinion on, as ridiculous as it sounds,
Speaker 1: because we, first of all, always have an opinion on
Speaker 1: every single player on this team, and then here you
Speaker 1: are listening to our opinion is explicitly in this series.
Speaker 1: And I think the fact that he didn't particularly make
Speaker 1: a significant impact, I mean again, don't blame him hard
Speaker 1: to cut through all that noise.
Speaker 4: No, no, no, And it's not good because none of the
Speaker 4: other players that we spoke about a significant impact.
Speaker 2: I think we're looking at it pragmatically, right, right, and
Speaker 2: right value.
Speaker 4: If we have needs offensively, Claire needs offensively, you have
Speaker 4: less needs defensively, where it would be not an efficient
Speaker 4: use of resources. Yeah, to keep this player on who
Speaker 4: happens to be a defenseman, right, you know, I think
Speaker 4: if he.
Speaker 1: Was, I don't know even what he was in his
Speaker 1: prior contract to something. All right, maybe you know we
Speaker 1: can entertain, we can entertain that. I don't know. I
Speaker 1: just don't have a good feeling about this one. Yeah, no, no, no,
Speaker 1: I'm surris, Who is right? Right?
Speaker 4: I mean the Bruins could do something, you know, to
Speaker 4: make us look like we have no idea what we're
Speaker 4: talking about, which.
Speaker 1: Or five five deal? Oh my god, then I'm gonna
Speaker 1: turn over my card, my hockey fandom membership card. I
Speaker 1: don't know what I'm talking about, but who else with
Speaker 1: this team? So that being said, any final thoughts Maria
Speaker 1: on Henry Yoki?
Speaker 2: Are you no? Not on Henry? I think we have.
Speaker 4: We have come to the conclusion that he may likely
Speaker 4: made a pit stop and it may be time for
Speaker 4: him to take the next travel itinerary to his next destination,
Speaker 4: but I'm not sure it's going to be in Boston.
Speaker 1: Yep. Well, listeners, we want to hear from you ahead
Speaker 1: of this free agency. Do you think he's going to
Speaker 1: be given a qualifying offer or not? And why do
Speaker 1: you think that? Will be so very curious to hear
Speaker 1: what you guys have to say, and always make sure
Speaker 1: you like and subscribe and follow us all on our
Speaker 1: social media, especially as we are going into the biggest
Speaker 1: day of the year, which is the free agency year
Speaker 1: Christmas in July. It sure is it's the end of
Speaker 1: the high Holy days and we of course will be
Speaker 1: live on free Agency day you'll see more details as
Speaker 1: we get a little bit closer on all of our socials.
Speaker 1: But as always, thank you Maria for a lovely conversation
Speaker 1: my pleasure.
Speaker 2: I enjoyed it as well
Speaker 1: And of course, go be's, go Bes.
