1:29 Speaker 1: But it's been another busy stretch for the Bruins. It

1:33 Speaker 1: just seems like they haven't really had time to breathe,

1:37 Speaker 1: and honestly, I just want to vent a little bit

1:40 Speaker 1: about the schedule, because I know the schedule's been horrible

1:44 Speaker 1: for a majority of the league, but it seems to

1:46 Speaker 1: me for the Bruins it's been a little bit more

1:49 Speaker 1: unpleasant because twice now this season we have had opponents

1:54 Speaker 1: come to the TD Garden where they arrive a day early,

1:59 Speaker 1: have a day of rest, get a practice, and our

2:02 Speaker 1: team is coming back from god only knows where and

2:07 Speaker 1: really doesn't even have an opportunity to catch the breadth.

2:10 Speaker 1: So I agree, I don't care for that.

2:12 Speaker 2: I mean, like we've talked about, I've enjoyed the schedule

2:16 Speaker 2: for the most part, but there have been a few

2:19 Speaker 2: elements that I'm not a fan of, especially considering that

2:22 Speaker 2: Boston was ahead in terms of games played too. That's

2:25 Speaker 2: I mean, it's everyone's starting to catch up now, but

2:28 Speaker 2: that wasn't great. And with the compressed schedule, we're starting

2:32 Speaker 2: to really feel the impact of those injuries.

2:40 Speaker 2: you know, if he's day to day, he might miss one,

2:44 Speaker 2: maybe two games. Day to day right now might mean

2:51 Speaker 1: having an impact across the league, and we'll talk about

2:55 Speaker 1: that because there are a couple more significant injuries that

2:59 Speaker 1: occurred recently, will do that in our round the Rink segment.

3:12 Speaker 1: updates and things are starting to good and bad as

3:27 Speaker 1: Nobody, right, And I had a little bit of an

3:31 Speaker 1: epiphany over the Thanksgiving weekend that I'm going to roll

3:35 Speaker 1: into somewhat of what I think is a hot take.

3:39 Speaker 1: Our listeners and viewers may not think so, but I'm

3:41 Speaker 1: going to fear my thought regardless, because why not, and

3:46 Speaker 1: because I can. And then I know you had been

3:48 Speaker 1: doing a little bit of statistical research for us that

3:54 Speaker 1: some of our listeners will find a little bit knowledgeable

3:58 Speaker 1: and maybe a little bit to concerning. Yes, where the

4:08 Speaker 1: around the rink segment, and we'll start with an injury

4:12 Speaker 1: update across the league.

4:14 Speaker 2: Yeah, Adam Fox is the most recent defenceman, big name

4:17 Speaker 2: defenceman to go down, although again it's.

4:22 Speaker 1: Believed he will be back up and running for the Olympics.

4:25 Speaker 1: Hard to say.

4:26 Speaker 2: He was put on LTIR, which is a little more

4:29 Speaker 2: serious than perhaps what Chucky's going through. So that's at

4:34 Speaker 2: least ten games twenty four days for LTIR, and he

4:39 Speaker 2: sustained some kind of upper body injury against the Tampa

4:42 Speaker 2: Bay Lightning. He got hit and was holding his arm,

4:46 Speaker 2: So that's that's never a good sign, especially after that,

4:48 Speaker 2: and then your team puts you on LTIR immediately, that's

4:52 Speaker 2: a bad sign too. Yes, So he went down and

4:55 Speaker 2: then the other will stay in the metro area because

4:59 Speaker 2: Kyle Palmyer he's also down and out with a knee injury,

5:04 Speaker 2: which if you haven't seen play where he got injured,

5:08 Speaker 2: I got to tell you, hockey players best athletes in

5:12 Speaker 2: the world. There's no athlete like a hockey player. Because

5:15 Speaker 2: this man goes right into the boards, feet first in

5:18 Speaker 2: the boards, really hurting. The play was not called dead

5:22 Speaker 2: because I think they were playing the Flyers. They had

5:25 Speaker 2: possession and play was down at the other end of

5:27 Speaker 2: the rink, the rep for one of the linesmen, whoever

5:30 Speaker 2: was watching him to see if he needed assistance getting off.

5:32 Speaker 1: He manages to get up.

5:34 Speaker 2: Very slowly, carefully skates to his own bench, and on

5:39 Speaker 2: his way he manages to tap the puck and ultimately

5:43 Speaker 2: ended up.

5:44 Speaker 1: Assisting on a goal while he was on his way

5:46 Speaker 1: off the ice.

5:47 Speaker 2: Say what you will about Kyle Paulmery and the New

5:50 Speaker 2: York Islanders hockey players. Man, this is why hockey is

5:54 Speaker 2: the superior sport to all other sports. And any other

5:58 Speaker 2: professional athlete get injured period, let alone a knee injury.

6:04 Speaker 1: And then assist on a scoring action in any sport.

6:10 Speaker 1: Any any time I hear about an injury like this,

6:13 Speaker 1: I always think back to this was quite a few

6:16 Speaker 1: years ago. Steven Stamkos when he played for the Tampa

6:19 Speaker 1: Bay Lightning in a game at the Ted Garden, literally

6:23 Speaker 1: breaks his faith on the Gold Coast. Yes, leaves the game,

6:27 Speaker 1: gets patched up, and then freaking comes back and play

6:30 Speaker 1: like his face is busted up. It's lunacy, you know.

6:34 Speaker 1: I think football players have a similar level. I think

6:38 Speaker 1: a toughness, but I think hockey players like bar Nuns yep,

6:43 Speaker 1: we've seen.

6:44 Speaker 2: How many guys have we seen on the Bruins play

6:47 Speaker 2: games with broken legs? Jake Debresk, get it, oh, Gregory

6:51 Speaker 2: Campbell and his was like a straight up break and

6:54 Speaker 2: he was out there popping around on one freaking leg,

6:57 Speaker 2: kill off a penalty. It's lunacy.

7:00 Speaker 1: And you're right. I think we touched upon this in

7:03 Speaker 1: our last pod. But this type of a condensed schedule

7:08 Speaker 1: I think is having an effect on teams across the

7:12 Speaker 1: league with these injuries. And we're not talking some of

7:15 Speaker 1: this stuff is not one or two days now at

7:17 Speaker 1: this point, these are weeks and months. And so I

7:21 Speaker 1: asked the question. And I know if you ask the

7:24 Speaker 1: players that are going to the Olympics, they will say

7:27 Speaker 1: it's worth it. But I asked the question, is this

7:31 Speaker 1: worth it? I would think that the league and owners

7:34 Speaker 1: may be revisiting allowing the players to participate in these

7:39 Speaker 1: Olympics if these types of significant injuries continue as a

7:44 Speaker 1: lead in to Olympic play.

7:47 Speaker 2: And it's been long enough now since NHL players have

7:52 Speaker 2: gone to the Olympics that I don't remember what the

7:56 Speaker 2: schedule was like for players back last Maybe was it

8:02 Speaker 2: really twenty ten?

8:03 Speaker 1: I'm no, they were in Sochi.

8:05 Speaker 2: No, so it's been twelve years because Sochi was I believe,

8:08 Speaker 2: the last time that the NHL had players. But it's

8:13 Speaker 2: curious because I'm not sure what the schedule was like

8:17 Speaker 2: and how long the break was that year typically our

8:22 Speaker 2: and so the Olympic break is also a longer break

8:26 Speaker 2: for the players this year because typically their break is

8:29 Speaker 2: about ten days in February, and depending on exactly when

8:35 Speaker 2: your team goes on the break, I think it ultimately

8:39 Speaker 2: is maybe seven days of no hockey for us as fans,

8:42 Speaker 2: but ten days for the players. And this is a

8:47 Speaker 2: three week no hockey for US, three weeks of no

8:51 Speaker 2: NHL hockey, so it's that's almost the entire month of February.

8:55 Speaker 1: So I don't even know.

8:56 Speaker 2: I'm assuming the back end of the schedule is also

8:59 Speaker 2: going to be a little bit busy if their goal

9:02 Speaker 2: is to make sure that they are not having a

9:05 Speaker 2: super late Stanley Cup again, which obviously they already have

9:08 Speaker 2: the date set, but so it'll be interesting and those

9:11 Speaker 2: rosters are going to be decided this month, so we

9:15 Speaker 2: will know the final rosters I believe around January first,

9:19 Speaker 2: around Christmas time, January first, New Year so that's coming

9:23 Speaker 2: up very soon. I know we'll be talking more and

9:26 Speaker 2: more as those rosters come out. Certainly I've got opinions

9:30 Speaker 2: on players and who should be there and who should

9:33 Speaker 2: not be there.

9:34 Speaker 1: I know you have very strong opinions about the goaltending,

9:38 Speaker 1: and that'll be very curious to see that lands for

9:40 Speaker 1: Team USA, specifically for Team usas and to answer your question,

9:46 Speaker 1: when they come back from the Olympic break. Yes, I'm

9:49 Speaker 1: looking at the Bruins schedule from March. It's gross. It's gross.

9:56 Speaker 2: There's literally just it's the same other day, every the day.

10:00 Speaker 2: And there are two back to baths two different times

10:05 Speaker 2: in March. They will be playing back to back games.

10:09 Speaker 2: Are they a home and away back to back? That's

10:11 Speaker 2: the worst two.

10:12 Speaker 1: One is away and one of them is the home

10:16 Speaker 1: and away situation. So it's it's gross. It's gross, gross, gross, gross, gross.

10:21 Speaker 1: But back to back away, so there's travel. Oh, actually

10:23 Speaker 1: I take that back this three. So it's again it

10:28 Speaker 1: sounds like we're whining. It sounds like we're whining, but

10:31 Speaker 1: I just and we can get into this topic of

10:34 Speaker 1: conversation later on in the season in terms of, if any,

10:39 Speaker 1: the impact of going to the Olympics, to the extent

10:42 Speaker 1: that if there were any injuries when these players come

10:45 Speaker 1: back right, or they've got lingering issues or injuries as

10:51 Speaker 1: you're heading into the playoffs for particular teams, the impact

10:56 Speaker 1: of that. And we've also started hearing a little bit

11:00 Speaker 1: of trade rumor rumberlings. Now, I don't know that there's

11:04 Speaker 1: anything significant brewing, and I would be surprised if any

11:10 Speaker 1: teams make deals before the actual trade deadline in March,

11:14 Speaker 1: because again, you've got this big gap coming up here

11:19 Speaker 1: in February and teams maybe waiting to see where things fall,

11:25 Speaker 1: who's healthy, who's not healthy. But it doesn't prevent people

11:30 Speaker 1: from talking a little bit of tea. And one of

11:33 Speaker 1: the names of teams that keeps coming up in trade

11:37 Speaker 1: rumors is the Vancouver Canucks because they are having pretty

11:42 Speaker 1: much a shit season. Fire sale.

11:44 Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's pretty obvious, yeah, that Vancouver's management

11:50 Speaker 2: is doing whatever it can in this current season to

11:54 Speaker 2: convince Quinn to stay. Because while it's not been over said,

12:00 Speaker 2: I think you can draw the conclusion that, based on

12:03 Speaker 2: his comments and interviews and things that I've heard from

12:07 Speaker 2: thirty two thoughts that he's waiting to see what happens,

12:10 Speaker 2: which means if they're in the toilet and they're not positive,

12:15 Speaker 2: changes aren't happening. He doesn't want to stay, he's willing

12:19 Speaker 2: to leave because, like any elite NHL player, at the

12:23 Speaker 2: end of the day, he wants a cup. He wants

12:26 Speaker 2: a legitimate shot of the Cup, and that's just not

12:28 Speaker 2: something that he has had with this Vancouver team, with

12:32 Speaker 2: this management. So I think right now the idea behind

12:37 Speaker 2: this fire sale is, well, we're going to do whatever

12:40 Speaker 2: it takes to fix this, and if they don't, I

12:44 Speaker 2: don't imagine he's going to be signing any kind of

12:48 Speaker 2: extension this summer because he'll be then going into his

12:52 Speaker 2: final year of his contract.

12:54 Speaker 1: Yeah, I wouldn't do it either. And the Hughes boys

12:58 Speaker 1: wanting to play together, so that would potentially leave the

13:01 Speaker 1: door open for him going to New Jersey to play

13:05 Speaker 1: with his brother Jack and Loot. But found it interesting

13:08 Speaker 1: that there's conversations already starting. The other interesting thing I've

13:13 Speaker 1: read today is this is no shocker, and any of

13:16 Speaker 1: us could say the Edmonton Oilers looking for a goalie

13:19 Speaker 1: or need a frigging goalie.

13:21 Speaker 2: That's a mess there too, just a mess. They're in

13:24 Speaker 2: a lot of trouble. We'll talk a little bit later

13:27 Speaker 2: about this. I ran my Thanksgiving predictions model this past weekend,

13:32 Speaker 2: and it doesn't look good for the Oilers at all.

13:37 Speaker 2: It comes down to.

13:39 Speaker 1: They got a little bit of bad luck.

13:40 Speaker 2: They've got issues with their points percentage, and their goals

13:46 Speaker 2: against average as a team is bad. I'm not one

13:50 Speaker 2: hundred percent placing everything on the goaltending by any means.

13:54 Speaker 2: I mean, let's be honest, if you are an NHL goaltend,

14:00 Speaker 2: if you are a professional hockey player, and you play

14:04 Speaker 2: one game in the NHL, let alone many games in

14:07 Speaker 2: the NHL, you're really good at that sport at that position.

14:12 Speaker 2: I'm not saying that Skinner isn't or Pickard isn't. They're

14:18 Speaker 2: just not the right guys for this team. We've seen

14:23 Speaker 2: that with other players where things haven't gone really well,

14:26 Speaker 2: they move to another team and they're a whole new player, right.

14:30 Speaker 2: I think what's kind of surprising is the fact that

14:34 Speaker 2: it's been somewhat obvious to the rest of us non

14:39 Speaker 2: fans casual watchers of that team. It's been pretty obvious

14:44 Speaker 2: for a long time now, at least three years, that

14:48 Speaker 2: that tandem that starting goalie. He's just not your guy.

14:53 Speaker 2: I don't know why it's been taking them this long

14:57 Speaker 2: to come to that conclusion. And then the fact that

14:59 Speaker 2: the trade rumors that are being circulated right now are

15:03 Speaker 2: to trade for a different goalie who is also not

15:08 Speaker 2: the guy in Tristan Yari.

15:11 Speaker 1: No, I don't understand. I've heard that name, I heard

15:13 Speaker 1: the Bennington name. The one thing, the one thing that

15:17 Speaker 1: I did read in this report is whatever Edmonton decides

15:21 Speaker 1: to do when it comes to their goaltending situation, it

15:24 Speaker 1: will be a trade for the guy, so whoever they're

15:28 Speaker 1: looking for at this because let's face it, they've been

15:31 Speaker 1: trying to just put a band aid on their situation

15:35 Speaker 1: for years. And I still don't understand why Connor McDavid

15:39 Speaker 1: extended there. I honestly don't know, unless he's privy to

15:43 Speaker 1: something that the rest of us don't know in terms

15:46 Speaker 1: of what they want to build for the future to

15:49 Speaker 1: try and ultimately have this guy in Connor McDavid hoisting

15:53 Speaker 1: a Stanley Cup. You know, whatever move they make, it

15:56 Speaker 1: sounds like it has to be the move that they

15:59 Speaker 1: want to identify who their goaltender will be for a

16:03 Speaker 1: foreseeable future period of time. And maybe that's part and

16:07 Speaker 1: parcel of why David only signed a two year deal.

17:40 Speaker 1: I sat down and I start scrolling through my socials

17:43 Speaker 1: and see, all of a sudden, an hour before the game,

17:46 Speaker 1: it's announced that both Pavelzaka and David Pastronach would be

17:51 Speaker 1: missing that game, to which I said, what the hell happened?

17:55 Speaker 2: What the hell happened to David Posterronach. I don't know

17:59 Speaker 2: what happened with Zaka. I don't think that we got

18:02 Speaker 2: eyes on what happened there. But with Pasta, there was

18:07 Speaker 2: a clip circulating where he was skating and it looked

18:13 Speaker 2: very similar to what happened with Arvidson. With the speculation

18:20 Speaker 2: there based on what everybody saw was a skating related

18:24 Speaker 2: possible growing pull, and that is something that can happen

18:31 Speaker 2: from this condensed schedule, this excessive use.

18:34 Speaker 1: So that's kind of the concern.

18:36 Speaker 2: He's just out right now, he's not officially on anything

18:41 Speaker 2: as far as I've seen, unless Maria, you are seeing

18:44 Speaker 2: anything out there in the interwebs, any updates. But he's

18:48 Speaker 2: day to day as far as we know, Arvidson is

18:52 Speaker 2: now day to day. They've been doing reassigning up and down,

18:56 Speaker 2: some paper transactions as hypologists have to make sure everything pathetic.

19:43 Speaker 1: Yeah? I thought that Arvidson and Charlie Mack might have

20:44 Speaker 1: will be back in the lineup tomorrow. Tomorrow being Tuesday,

21:54 Speaker 2: I will say that the New York Islanders put forty

21:58 Speaker 2: four shots on goal on Jeremy, Yeah, twenty three of

22:02 Speaker 2: them in the third period. Yeah, and Jeremy Swayman stopped

22:07 Speaker 2: them all and they were not easy saves. This is

22:10 Speaker 2: when you know what goalie looks locked in or is

26:30 Speaker 1: the Bruins showed no signs of life until the third period.

26:35 Speaker 2: And then when Mike Sullivan saw that his team was

26:40 Speaker 2: somewhat under siege and the Bruins had closed the gap

26:44 Speaker 2: from four nothing to four to two, he called a

26:47 Speaker 2: time out and ripped his team.

26:49 Speaker 1: A new one. Yeah, there was nothing good about that game.

26:55 Speaker 2: It was a trash game. It was garbage. I felt

26:58 Speaker 2: so bad for the goalten it was Corporsalo.

27:24 Speaker 2: And again, these effing interference, tripping, hooking penalties.

27:34 Speaker 2: Yes, well, I can't remember which game it was, if

27:38 Speaker 2: it was that game or San Jose. I remember thinking

27:43 Speaker 2: this either the San Jose game or it was after

27:46 Speaker 2: the Rangers game, and quite frankly, it probably was the

27:48 Speaker 2: Rangers game that could very well be a turning point.

27:53 Speaker 1: Game for good or for bad.

27:55 Speaker 2: It's either going to serve as a wake up call

27:59 Speaker 2: or or it's going to be the game that we

28:03 Speaker 2: will be able to point to to say that was

28:07 Speaker 2: the moment that cost them a spot in the playoffs

28:12 Speaker 2: because of the penalties, that they lost the game, not

28:17 Speaker 2: necessarily because they were the worst team on the ice

28:22 Speaker 2: or a bad team, they lost the game because of penalties.

28:28 Speaker 2: And I think it's going to be right at this time.

28:32 Speaker 2: So how they choose to move forward, if they are

28:36 Speaker 2: capable of moving forward in a positive direction, I don't know,

28:41 Speaker 2: because we are what twenty five games in and they've

28:48 Speaker 2: shown some discipline. We've seen them turn it around a

28:52 Speaker 2: little bit, but they can't seem to maintain it. So

28:57 Speaker 2: I'm nervous about that.

28:59 Speaker 1: Yes, and you know what their PQ was handling their

29:04 Speaker 1: lack of discipline. But now when you have key penalty

29:09 Speaker 1: killers sitting.

29:10 Speaker 2: In the box, well, and then so let's talk about

29:14 Speaker 2: the model and the predictions because it's all related to this,

29:17 Speaker 2: and this is the stuff that we're going to need

29:19 Speaker 2: to be paying attention to the most.

29:21 Speaker 1: This is what I'm going to be keying in.

29:22 Speaker 2: So I'll put the link to last year's substack article

29:26 Speaker 2: in the show notes, and there will be a more

29:29 Speaker 2: in depth explainer about this year's model later this week

29:33 Speaker 2: on the Substack. But ultimately, what I've done is I've

29:37 Speaker 2: taken data from twenty thirteen to presence, and I've compared

29:43 Speaker 2: where all the different teams were by Thanksgiving of any

29:47 Speaker 2: given year and then their playoff outcome, like do they

29:50 Speaker 2: make playoffs?

29:51 Speaker 1: Do they not make playoffs?

29:52 Speaker 2: And I've looked at a whole bunch of different very

29:55 Speaker 2: commonly used metrics, the rushes, goals for, goals against, the team,

30:01 Speaker 2: goals against average, all those kinds of things. You've probably

30:04 Speaker 2: heard us talk a little bit about the PDO and

30:08 Speaker 2: stuff like that. So ultimately, what I then did was

30:12 Speaker 2: I ran it through a couple of different statistical models

30:16 Speaker 2: to see which of the most common metrics hockey analytics

30:22 Speaker 2: that may or may not impact a team's ability to

30:26 Speaker 2: either make it or not make it to the playoffs.

30:28 Speaker 2: And so this year ruins. And again this is based

30:33 Speaker 2: on standings on Thanksgiving Day. As we move forward things

30:39 Speaker 2: will change. But on Thanksgiving Day, the Bruins had it

30:44 Speaker 2: had gone down, actually, because I ran the model a

30:46 Speaker 2: couple of times with some different tweaks here and there.

30:49 Speaker 2: The Bruins are down to only about a forty percent

30:51 Speaker 2: chance of making the playoffs right now. And the key

30:54 Speaker 2: reason is Boston has an absurdly high penalty ki load.

31:01 Speaker 1: Duh, Okay.

31:02 Speaker 2: Their PDO is fairly average. So when you think about PDO,

31:06 Speaker 2: it kind of almost measures skill over luck. It's the

31:10 Speaker 2: shooting percentage and safe percentage. A PDO of one hundred

31:14 Speaker 2: is average. If it's a little bit over, you know, oh,

31:16 Speaker 2: they're just like maybe a little bit lucky. Or if

31:18 Speaker 2: it's a little if it's under, they're just having some.

31:20 Speaker 1: Bad puck luck.

31:21 Speaker 2: But because Boston is average in that regard, what we're

31:25 Speaker 2: seeing is that they are being saved by their elite goaltending.

31:29 Speaker 2: Boston is a team whose record is inflated relative to

31:34 Speaker 2: their underlying profile because their penalty kill safe percentage is

31:39 Speaker 2: unusually strong. So they are consistently getting bailed out of

31:44 Speaker 2: high danger PK chances because of their goaltending and because

31:50 Speaker 2: of some very key penalty killing players. Boston is right

31:54 Speaker 2: now sitting well, I guess I didn't check this morning

31:57 Speaker 2: because games were played yesterday, But after the Detroit game,

32:01 Speaker 2: Boston was in second place in the Atlantic. That may

32:04 Speaker 2: seem great, Wow, that sounds like, how could they possibly

32:07 Speaker 2: be in trouble? Like, surely that being in second place

32:10 Speaker 2: in the Atlantic means that they'll make the playoffs. But

32:12 Speaker 2: like I said, their current situation looks better than it

32:17 Speaker 2: actually is because their goalie is bailing them out consistently

32:21 Speaker 2: when it comes to the penalty kill. And I brought

32:25 Speaker 2: this up in our discord and shout out to MF

32:28 Speaker 2: pointed out, Oh, yeah, and that explains the plus thirteen

32:32 Speaker 2: goals saved above average expected for swaymen because all of

32:36 Speaker 2: those shots, he's just that good.

32:38 Speaker 1: He's just that good. So he's covering up these sins.

32:41 Speaker 2: And so not only is the PK currently, like statistically,

32:44 Speaker 2: a significant issue for the Bruins, but a lot of

32:48 Speaker 2: the really important variables within the model that contributes to

32:53 Speaker 2: predicting if a team will make the playoffs or not

32:56 Speaker 2: are also directly influenced by that penalty kill burden. I'm

33:01 Speaker 2: looking at things like rush shots against the team, how

33:04 Speaker 2: many shots on the rusher made against the team goal differentials,

33:09 Speaker 2: shots against, save percentage, the PK percentage, their net percentage

33:14 Speaker 2: on that. All of these things are related to the

33:16 Speaker 2: penalty kill. And if you're on the PK more, you're

33:18 Speaker 2: facing more shots against, you have to make more saves,

33:21 Speaker 2: you have to be on the defense a lot more,

33:24 Speaker 2: and that can then negatively impact your results here in

33:28 Speaker 2: this case, so really really interesting thing. My biggest question,

33:32 Speaker 2: and again the reason why you're gonna hear me now

33:35 Speaker 2: be hung up on the penalty kill. It's not that

33:38 Speaker 2: from here on out Boston has to be perfect like Angels,

33:42 Speaker 2: because let's be honest, right, it's the Bruins.

33:45 Speaker 1: Everyone's always going to be.

33:46 Speaker 2: They got a target on their back even without Marshant,

33:49 Speaker 2: they don't have to have zero. But if they want

33:52 Speaker 2: to turn it around, they have to reduce their penalty

33:56 Speaker 2: kill load by twenty percent fewer minutes, right, That could

34:03 Speaker 2: be one less PK per game, and they're going to

34:08 Speaker 2: have to somehow eke out two more regulation wins and

34:14 Speaker 2: improve that they're safe percentage. And when I say safe percentage,

34:18 Speaker 2: you may be thinking, well, how the heck could Jeremy

34:20 Speaker 2: Swayman save anymore? The only area of improvement then would

34:24 Speaker 2: have to end up being on Corpusollo in his game,

34:27 Speaker 2: so hopefully he can bring his up a little bit.

34:29 Speaker 2: But the save percentage is going to increase naturally if

34:32 Speaker 2: they're not on the PK nearly as much.

34:35 Speaker 1: That's going to be the key. So it's not ideal

34:38 Speaker 1: to take another five penalties as they did in the

34:42 Speaker 1: game against the Red Wings Saturday night.

34:45 Speaker 2: Jesus Christ right, I mean they're averaging three or four

34:49 Speaker 2: penalties per game at this point. If they can just

34:52 Speaker 2: literally have to have one less, one less, and that's

34:55 Speaker 2: a twenty five percent reduction in PK.

34:58 Speaker 1: I've actually gotten to the point where I consider it

35:01 Speaker 1: a moral victory if they can get through a period

35:05 Speaker 1: without a penalty a period.

35:07 Speaker 2: I don't think it's unreasonable to say, hey, take one

35:11 Speaker 2: less penalty for the love of God, and you might

35:14 Speaker 2: be able to then actually make it into the playoffs.

35:16 Speaker 1: Well, I think we've all watched enough hockey, both regular

35:20 Speaker 1: season and playoffs to know that this is not sustainable

35:27 Speaker 1: if you want to be a successful regular season team

35:31 Speaker 1: or potentially a playoff team.

35:33 Speaker 2: And I don't know why this is happening. I don't

35:38 Speaker 2: understand why it hasn't been corrupted. Now, I understand you're

35:43 Speaker 2: subject to the mercy sometimes of officials that are calling

35:47 Speaker 2: to attack bullshit. However, you're in control of your stick, right, Yeah,

35:52 Speaker 2: you are in control of your stick. Shouldn't the tripping calls,

35:58 Speaker 2: the interference calls, the hooking calls. Cut the shit, guys.

36:41 Speaker 2: have to actually be scoring necessarily more goals, Like it's

36:46 Speaker 2: it's taking shots. Well, you can't take shots if you're

36:50 Speaker 2: on the PQUE Okay, you can't. It's just it's just

36:56 Speaker 2: not gonna happen as much. And you know the safe percentage. Yeah,

37:02 Speaker 2: the Bruins are in fantastic shape in that regard. But like,

37:06 Speaker 2: you can improve your PDO if you improve your shooting,

37:09 Speaker 2: you know, So get off the stupid p K it's

37:14 Speaker 2: not about getting the goals in the net, Like, yes,

37:16 Speaker 2: the goals in the net are great. Goal differential is

37:19 Speaker 2: included in the model, like, it's all part of the

37:22 Speaker 2: bigger picture, But it's literally gonna come down to the

37:26 Speaker 2: penalties for Boston this season.

37:28 Speaker 1: And those statistics also have I would think, an impact

37:33 Speaker 1: on a lot of five v five played as well.

37:37 Speaker 2: Yes, yes, it's looking almost always exclusively at five v

37:42 Speaker 2: five and if you're not on the five v five

37:45 Speaker 2: you're gonna be either over under weighted or estimated on

37:50 Speaker 2: the result because you're you don't have the data doesn't

37:54 Speaker 2: exist for five.

37:57 Speaker 1: So yeah, well, I think think they all know, right

38:02 Speaker 1: because we hear them say it. That knowing and doing

38:06 Speaker 1: by very different things, apparently right, talking and implementing action

38:11 Speaker 1: is now. The game against the Red Wings at home,

38:15 Speaker 1: which was the first time the two teams had faced

38:18 Speaker 1: each other, was a very entertaining game. But again, it

38:22 Speaker 1: was a really good game. Non ideal that the Bruins

38:25 Speaker 1: allowed the Red Wings five powerplay opportunities. They killed them

38:29 Speaker 1: all off. They killed them all off. However, it took

38:32 Speaker 1: a shootout for them to win the game. But here's

38:38 Speaker 1: light of how they played against the Rangers the Friday

38:44 Speaker 1: of passengers on the ice during that game that didn't

38:48 Speaker 1: show up to play until the third period, the fact

38:51 Speaker 1: that Mark or Sturm held players accountable in his postgame remarks.

38:56 Speaker 1: He didn't have to name any names, and he would

38:59 Speaker 1: not allow anyone to make excuses for injuries. He went

39:04 Speaker 1: so far as he almost started to say I believe

39:07 Speaker 1: the word disappointed or disappointing. He stopped himself. But the

39:11 Speaker 1: fact that he expressed his dismay and that the Bruins

39:17 Speaker 1: bounced back in the game against the Red Wings. Understanding

39:21 Speaker 1: is you let two important crucial points walk out of

39:25 Speaker 1: your building on Friday, you cannot allow two more crucial

39:30 Speaker 1: points to walk out of your building on a Saturday night.

39:33 Speaker 1: Great game, but again the Morgan Geeky show two more

39:36 Speaker 1: goals in that game on Saturday night. Jeremy Swayman saved
