1:50 Speaker 1: Well, we have Mary Beth on not just because she is a great friend of the Pod and has a lot of really interesting things to say, but she's actually going to educate Maria and myself a little bit on the draft lottery, because just as a teaser, we're gonna be talking a little bit about that, because that might be the only thing to look forward to as a Boston Bruins fan. But we'll get into that in a little bit. Let's set the table. Not a heck of a lot to really talk about. The Bruins are about to play later this evening, their final team in California.

2:35 Speaker 1: They're slated to play the Ducks before they head more back east and stop in Detroit before coming back home on Tuesday next week, on April Foolsday, which feels like a cruel, cruel joke. But needless to say, this has not been a particularly spectacular road trip. The team's falling apart. U. How are you ladies feeling right now? Can I go first?

3:09 Speaker 2: This has been one big bucket of suck from day one. From day one, it started in training camp. It has not gotten any better. We have been teased with you know, a two or a three game run, and then we have had the cold bucket of water splashed on our faces and reality has hit that this team was just never going to be a good team and it is not a good team. And then when I read today and here today that Brad Marshand is likely to make his debut in a Florida Panthers jersey on Friday, almost three weeks exactly, almost three weeks exactly from the injury that he suffered, that was going to be you know, three to six weeks.

4:11 Speaker 2: And again, I hate to sound like a broken record, but I'm going to keep saying it until someone proves me wrong. Something stinks about that trade. It was never right from when it was announced, and I will never be right with it because it makes still no sense to me.

4:34 Speaker 1: Mm hmm. Yeah. How are you feeling, Marybeth? You're the eternal optimist in our gift coord group, which everyone should totally join.

4:53 Speaker 5: It's been tough to watch because we're not finding bright spots. You know, at the beginning of the season, there could be excuses, you'd see some good games, you'd see some flashes of brilliance, you'd see a few lines doing some fun things, and lately the entire team is just a mess, each one, each person, each line, each combination, each game, and it's just getting harder and harder to watch. You're you're not getting excited about any piece of it. The Sharks game, to me, was really the epitome of where we are.

5:33 Speaker 5: I was away, so I was watching it on ESPN plus. Somehow it switched over to the Sharks broadcast instead of the Bruins, and it was just full of love and light and joy and happiness. And you can see how much one of those kids were having on the ice now they've been knocked out a playoff contention. There a ball playing together. And I went back to the Bruins. The Bruins brought cast and there's just like this cloud, even over the announcing, even the broadcast. You know, we're feeling it and it's it's a new place for a lot of Bruins fans.

6:14 Speaker 5: Yes, well we haven't been, frankly since you know, the twenty eleven Stanley Cup Finals. Because there has been a long standing history of competitiveness and good teams. You know where were you know where we were we short or shy of closing the deal during that period of time. Yes, but you still can't take away from the fact that they were always a contending team.

6:49 Speaker 6: They were always at the top of the league.

6:53 Speaker 2: You expected them to make the playoffs at a high seed or you know, a decent seed, Whereas now you're being talked about in the same sentences with the San Jose Sharks.

7:08 Speaker 6: That's yeah, that's you know, I mean, I don't.

7:12 Speaker 2: Want to say rock bottom, but that's not a place that any Boston Bruins franchise should find themselves in.

7:21 Speaker 1: Yeah, And I have to say I hate to be right in these kinds of instances, but if you've been listening to the podcast for even just the last two months when the rumors really got started about Brad Marshan possibly being traded, and you know, I don't think that his trade is the only reason why things have happened the way that they've happened. Right, Like, when you do get rid of I think if you get rid of a lot of these veterans, even if they didn't trade marshand him not being there because he was injured, but then just really cutting off.

7:59 Speaker 1: You know, one leg by shipping out two pretty significant voices in the room would have done damage. But the fact that then Marshan was sent away on top of this, you've effectively cut both legs off of this team. And you know, I got some questionable responses when I put out there, like, what's gonna happen is you're going to have a subpar product out on the ice, Your locker room is going to tank. Your fans are gonna be despondent. Oh well, if you think that the product is any good now, No, but they were mediocre before.

8:41 Speaker 1: Now they're garbage. So, once again, I hate to say it, in this case, I was right. They got worse. It is painful to watch. Quite frankly, if I didn't have to watch because of our podcast and the conversation that I so thoroughly enjoy with, you know, the two of you and the folks in the discord, I wouldn't be watching this product. Why would I want to watch this? It is? It's not just bad. It's depressing because you can tell the psychology of what's happening out there. It's bad.

9:20 Speaker 6: They don't want the nadir of mine. Tell me today that her brother and sister in law went to a game with their children just recently. Two kids, two parents, one thousand dollars. They spent in total one thousand dollars to watch what we have been enduring. Now again they make the choices to purchase the tickets, and I understand all of that. I understand all of that, but it's not a fair.

9:54 Speaker 2: You have not been subjected to any type of consistent quality hockey throughout the course of this season.

10:07 Speaker 2: I think it's going to take the franchise a really long time to recover from trading Brad Marshand.

10:14 Speaker 1: I really do agreed, very damaging. So let's talk about the one thing I think that everyone kind of was all a twitter about that did come out of this road trip thus far. We've seen Jeremy Swayman looking to get involved in extracurriculars for some time now. This is not new, This is definitely part of his personality.

10:45 Speaker 6: No one, let's let's get this on the record.

10:48 Speaker 2: He himself has said yes previously, that he wants to score a goal and he wants to get.

10:55 Speaker 1: Into a fight, right, you know, and certainly not surprising to hear in previous years from a young man who was, you know, twenty five or younger. But when you take on the position of full time starting goaltender and you become a little bit older, the expectations that you know, the mantle of responsibility that is now placed on you.

11:29 Speaker 1: In the position, in the role that many many Hall of famers have been in, right, and so there is this expectation because there's only one goalie on the ice at a time for these games, like all eyes are on you. There is a very specific expectation of what your job is and what your job is not. Now what we're we won't kind of debate the role of the extracurriculars, the fisticuffs, if you will, in general in the NHL, because that's its own hot topic. But when it comes to a goaltender and having them get involved in a fight, what is your take on that, What is your interpretation of what the rules are around that?

12:27 Speaker 5: Whereabeth I think that a goalie has a specific role and it lives in the crease a little bit outside of it sometimes but that makes us uncomfortable, but that's their space. I think of it like alignsman or even an umpire and baseball. They look at each Each person has one thing that they watch. They're not watching the whole field of play. They're not watching the entire rink. They're watching this place right here to see what happened bins. The goalie's job is to stay in the crease and watch for pucks flying at them.

13:05 Speaker 5: That's their job.

13:06 Speaker 1: Their job is not to see what are they doing over there?

13:09 Speaker 6: And do I need to be participating in that now?

13:14 Speaker 5: I would say if there's a fight taking place somewhere right around your crease and you're there, and okay, maybe that's when you are participating in those sorts of extracurricular activities, but you're not looking to go all the way across the ice now. Should somebody have stepped in, probably, But if they didn't, it's not your job as the goalie to do it, And you shouldn't actually be watching that far over to see what's going on.

13:43 Speaker 1: So that's where I stand on it. And I'm a Swayman fan.

13:46 Speaker 5: Or I was. I don't know now, but I generally

13:51 Speaker 5: I'm generally a Swayman fan. But I do think you know what kind of this is one of those stay in your lanes.

13:59 Speaker 2: This this to me, I have no problem with a goalie protecting his or her own end of their house. You you have a forward or anybody coming in to your crease who's jabbing a stick at you, or you know who was a Sean Avery doing.

14:21 Speaker 1: Right? You want to you wanna you want to pop that guy. I have no issue at all with that.

14:29 Speaker 2: Okay, But in this circumstance and the way this season has gone, let me just say I too feel that Swayman is a relatively important part of the future of this franchise. And I had said early on that when we were discussing trades he would been one of the untouchables.

14:55 Speaker 6: Where my patience with him is starting to reach its last line of defense is I'm sick of hearing him talk, and I'm sick of seeing him on the end of these blow up games every single time. Five goals, six goals, seven goals, eight goals against Carolina, Right, they weren't all his, but you contributed to that. And in this particular circumstance with Darcy Kemper and Who'stadenova?

15:37 Speaker 1: Okay, Kemper was getting a penalty for what he did.

15:42 Speaker 2: It was a one goal game at that point in time, and so you, Jeremy Swayman, are going to do what? Skate out to center ice, fight the other goalie who's already going in the box, and then one of your teammates would likely have to go in the box to serve a five minute major penalty for you for fighting and wrong time, wrong place.

16:10 Speaker 1: Then you just imploded.

16:12 Speaker 2: Then you just imploded after that, And you know what, I know, Nikita Zadora walked back his comments that he made after the game, and maybe somebody got to him or somebody told him he needed to walk I don't know, but my take on what Nikita Zadora said was, you can't even do your job right now, swaming.

16:42 Speaker 1: Don't tell me how to do mine.

16:44 Speaker 6: You're going to try to do my job for me.

16:48 Speaker 1: Yep.

16:48 Speaker 6: And I'm not the only one who felt this way.

16:52 Speaker 2: Oh yeah, morning brew and Andrew Raycroft, who is the very definition of optimism and you know, trying to put a positive spin on everything.

17:08 Speaker 6: Was questioning, what are you doing, Swayman? What i you actually doing?

17:15 Speaker 1: So I agree with you.

17:17 Speaker 2: Your role, Jeremy is to maintain your end of the house. Now, if you're talking about you know, a bench clearing brawl, or you know, everybody's pulling at everybody else and the other goalie is getting in on one of his guys and he's sitting back there watching it all happen at the other end of the ice. Yeah, I would probably skate out there too, But in this specific instance, you guys got bigger problems to worry about, then you wanting to get into a fight and then say it was because you were protecting your guy.

17:56 Speaker 2: Now, I think Ustadenoff could take care of himself and figured that out, or one of your guys right would have figured that out exactly.

18:07 Speaker 1: Yeah, And you know, to your point of is it or when is it appropriate for a goalie to cross that red line? I think everyone's favorite example was when the Blues were playing wild and Jordan Binnington was being Jordan Bennington and being a menace and getting involved in the fight and Marc Andre Fleury crossed the line and wanted to fight him, and the refs wouldn't have it totally absolutely one acceptable reason, and you know, like, let's be honest, there are also other scenarios where there's kind of an in between, right, so I can't remember who the opponent was, but I know this season fairly recently, the Ottaway Senators were playing against a team where something was happening down at that end, and Lena's Allmark approached the red line and was kind of like saying words right that is also I think, kind of an in between area where he's just saying, hey, watch yourself.

19:19 Speaker 1: He didn't take his I don't believe he took his uh, his hat, his mask, off, his gloves or anything like that, but you know, like skating out saying words basically making sure like you stay where you are and I will stay where I am, you know.

19:38 Speaker 6: Okay, all right, I will.

19:40 Speaker 1: There are certain scenarios I think where that can be acceptable, but and I think I almost wonder if that's what Kemper was doing was the because he didn't shed any equipment, but Swimen was just like taking it all off right away. It's like, dude, what are you doing?

19:56 Speaker 5: Like?

19:57 Speaker 6: Can you not like this?

19:58 Speaker 1: This an? This game already sucks. You are not making it better.

20:04 Speaker 2: And I don't want to call him a fake because you know, I don't know, but in that circumstance, you just have to look at him and say, what the hell did you think you were doing?

20:16 Speaker 6: What did you think you were going to accomplishly by that?

20:20 Speaker 1: Nobody?

20:21 Speaker 2: And it makes it bothers me now that the spin is being turned around and you know, the door I was saying, that was not what his intention was. He wasn't expecting the question from the person who asked. And you know the tone and the tenor it was right after a bad loss. I'm like, no, that's when you speak your truth. I'm sorry, I agree, that's when you speak your truth. You're pissed off and you've let everybody know that you were pissed off.

20:52 Speaker 1: Well, and I think this entire situation is also just ultimately a symptom of the large your problem right with yads right now right leadership? You know, and this is not excusing Swaman whatsoever, but like, who in that room is gonna teach him? That's not how we do this. That's not your job, right, Who Who's gonna mentor him? And be that veteran to say, get your head out of your ass? What are you doing? Don't you ever do that again? You know who's who else is on the ice to respond in that situation?

21:31 Speaker 1: Why did no one then respond after that happened with who's Nadinov. Why that's that's a bigger problem.

21:40 Speaker 2: Why did no one on the team feel like they've checked out?

21:46 Speaker 5: And that comes down to the problem of the whole season is the lack of leadership and and that's been a problem really from day one one.

21:55 Speaker 6: Yeah, I agree with you again and.

21:58 Speaker 5: Again I think with Marshanghon McAboy out hampus Lynn Home out.

22:06 Speaker 6: Carrying the team on his back. But he can't.

22:10 Speaker 2: And I think I said it from the early stages of the season that I called it a disconnect. There has been a disconnect in that room from day one, and there has been no chemistry that we have seen on the ice. There was a line that had chemistry and that was the fourth line when they were playing over their heads the nowadays you know we had, yeah, and you know revisionist history. And but this speaks to management.

22:48 Speaker 2: Shipped out Bruce Cassidy, believe the stories or not, because the players were complaining about his coaching style. Then you bring in a player's coach in Jim Montgomery and give him support the three of us. But given the team and given how they played and given their roster, the three of us could have coached that team and had success. Okay, all right, but be that as it may. He's a player's coach. You bring in the players coach, you fire the players coach. And what has he turned around to do?

23:25 Speaker 2: He has the Saint Louis Blues in a playoff spot. Momus Cassidy's Vegas Golden Knights are primed for a playoff run yet again?

23:37 Speaker 1: And where are we? And where every one has? Everyone who has left in the last year is currently in a playoff position, right. Jim Montgomery has pulled the Blues into the playoffs. Trent Frederick is on the Oilers, Charlie Coyle is on the Abs, Brandon Carlo is on the Leafs, Brazo is on the wild.

So and I've got that built in, you know, jaded Boston sports fan in culture bold on me, right, right, But you know, when you see and but no, I'm not all kidding aside, but when you see right, people such as as yourself and Mary Beth and others in our discord group who you know, have the ability to look at things holistically. And I can say, all right, that makes that makes sense.

Although the way this season is going, maybe that even won't happen, but just a quick tour around the rink, the OV watch continues. We are six goals away from seeing that record fall. I think, you know, knock on every piece of wood, touch every piece of wood in your house, folks, that this happens because Ovi's he know, man, he wants to retire.

27:27 Speaker 2: I don't know that they would be you know, I don't know what team would you know, relishes that or wants to be. You know, the goalie who gives up the goal that breaks the great ones record, Well that person.

Whoever the goaltender was that Ov scored his first NHL goal on recently received an autographed OVE jersey and it said you were the first or whatever, so I thought that was that's cool. I agree. Yeah. Uh so that continues, and you know their schedule going ahead.

28:10 Speaker 1: They've got then is it the Bruins are next after they play the Wild or no, they have they have the oh my god, well they have the Saber, they have the Bruins, and then they have got Carolina, which you know, it seems like maybe they've kind of stopped the bleeding on their goalie problem on that end, and then they've got Chicago. So considering three out of those five teams kind of sieves we might be seeing it happen in the next week or so, which is kind of exciting to see. The other big news, of course, Brad Marshan is tentatively scheduled to hit the ice for the Florida Panthers this Friday against Utah.

28:58 Speaker 1: That's all I'm gonna say about that, because I don't wanna, I don't wanna, I don't want to think about it. And then the other really big piece of news again as a as an avid listener of thirty two Thoughts, because that's the only way that I can get all of my league wide news digested into one place, because you know, Mayerbeth is the one who actually watches and follows all of these other things. But that's the only time I have is too late the four hours a week for thirty two Thoughts. But there is discussion of another expansion team in Houston.

29:35 Speaker 1: It's come up that the NHL has identified billionaire Dan Friedkin as an ownership candidate for a potential Houston expansion team. Anyone want to guess what the price tag for entry into this club is likely to cost? Per Elliott Friedman, what was the most recent sale? It was Tampa and autob Yes, so you want to take a guess, it's you're gonna be blown away, and you might not be right. I mean, it's not a billion dollars more. Are you shitting me? Right now? They're anticipating the price tag to be two billion with a B dollars that's asting I agree, the reasoning being that even and this is a massive jump from what Seattle paid, Utah is a little bit weird because of their situation so they're.

30:56 Speaker 2: I think we've had this conversation that should not even be considered an expand yeah, yeah, yeah, so.

So, because current active teams were recently sold for more than a billion dollars, any new teams that come in, this is the This is not this is not my logic, this is not my reasoning. This is what has been put out there. Any new teams must come in higher so as not to devalue the rest of the league, which, in my mind is sounds a little insane because why would I if I had billions of dollars to spend on a team, why would I pay more money for an unknown entity in an unknown hockey market than I would pay for the New York Rangers or you know, the Vancouver Canucks.

31:57 Speaker 1: Like it's it shouldn't be more. That's insane, That is insane. These people are too wealthy.

32:07 Speaker 2: They are not only but is there a legitimate hockey market that can support two teams in freaking Texas?

32:16 Speaker 1: I don't know, and you know, and you know, so this is like, you know, this is not happening too soon. Although we were all quite again surprised by Utah, and there's talk of, well, you can't just let one in now because you have to do two because of you know, the conferences and whatever. And then and so that opens the door for Atlanta and we're like, we who wants to have Atlanta come back in whatever? But that's the news as of right now. Otherwise there's no other information. But that's insane.

33:12 Speaker 2: Folks, go and find the video of Patrick Wah's postgame comments after a loss on the twenty fifth, where the Islanders had a potential game winning goal taken away for goalie interference. And when you look at the replay, you have to say to yourself, Toronto has lost their ever loving minds because it was Elvis Murziliskis who pushes pushes, was it brock Nelson pushes brock Nelson that he has the chance to reset himself to make the save. The puckets tipped in and they call goaltender interference and Toronto wipes the goal off the board, to which, when asked about it afterwards, if they're going to take these goals off the board then and if Toronto was afraid of reversing a call made by its officials.

34:24 Speaker 4: I love this, perfect I love perfect man perfectly said, because that encapsulates everything that all of us as fans were not just talking about Bruins, because I'm sure pretty much every team in the league has had these you know, made up goaltender interference calls against throughout.

34:48 Speaker 6: The So He's absolutely right.

34:49 Speaker 2: Why the hell do we need Toronto if you can look at that play and still not have them reverse it.

34:57 Speaker 1: Yeah, And I've been hearing more, more and more in various you know publications, whether it's written online, a variety of podcasts, not just Bruins podcasts. But I'm hearing more and more almost every day, the replay fatigue and how awful it is, and how frequently goals are being turned over, and the number of replay reviews for these goals keeps increasing exponentially every year, and they keep turning over almost half of if not more, of these goals.

35:36 Speaker 2: We're not even finished this season. I think I talked about it in my solo. We're not even through the whole season and more than half have been overturned. You can't tell me that those were all legitimate goaltender interference calls.

38:42 Speaker 1: All Right, So, if the Bruins continue to rival the Buffalo Sabers in their quest for the most losses in a row, the one positive is we might act should be looking at an opportunity to participate in the draft lottery, which Ria and I are less familiar with, because quite frankly, this is a you know, in the grand scheme of the NHL, A newer phenomenon and not something that the Bruins and their fans have really had to pay a lot of attention to for a very long time in the last I don't know if at least fifteen years.

39:29 Speaker 1: I mean, I don't even remember when it started. So Marybeth, please enlighten us. When did the draft lottery get going? How does it work? Because it's it's it's if you're from New York state, this this is gonna you're gonna laugh at this joke. If you're not, then I'm sorry. But it feels a little bit like the eleven o'clock lotto call with Yolanda Vega with the little balls and they pick out who goes first, and I that's the only thing I can compare it to. And I don't understand how it works.

40:04 Speaker 2: So and I asked in question, did the NHL adopt a bit of the NBA's policy with their lottery balls?

40:12 Speaker 6: You know, it's almost like a bingo wheel.

40:15 Speaker 5: Well, we actually we have a literal lottery machine with ping pong balls. That's actually our thing. So the NHL started the draft lottery in nineteen ninety five, whateen, But they've changed the rules here and there like every few years they've changed it. The current structure has been in place since twenty twenty one, so sometimes they've had bigger like more draft picks, more teams were able to do different things with it, so it's changed. The NHL, the NBA, and Major League Baseball all have a draft lottery.

40:53 Speaker 5: The NFL does not. So I'm going to give you just a little bit just going back to sort of how the draft works for people who don't know how the draft works. Essentially, how in a perfect draft. In a pure draft, every team gets one pick per round and there are seven rounds, so that's without trading around, without moving things around. Players need to be between eighteen and twenty if they're from North America. If they're international players, they can be up to age twenty one if they have not yet played in the NHL, and then basically anybody who goes undrafted, they're eligibly to be drafted till age twenty one or.

41:35 Speaker 1: They become a UFAs.

41:38 Speaker 5: So the draft lottery came about for the non playoff teams to give them the best chance to select players. But it was supposed to avoid tanking, and that's actually why they have the lottery. Because otherwise, let's take the Bruins for instance, We're not going to make the playoffs. I mean, technically, mathematically there's a chance, but we all know we're not going to make it. So now, if there wasn't a draft lottery, theoretically the Bruins, now I feel funny saying this, they would stop playing.

42:15 Speaker 5: Well they are, but it's not you know, Hank on purpose to try and be the worst team in the league, so they would get the top player, right, because it's umast to the bottom of all these teams who weren't going to make the playoffs. So that's actually why the draft lottery exists. The draft lottery decides the first sixteen picks because thirty two teams, there's sixteen, you know, half of them make it into the playoffs, half of them don't. But it is it's literally a lottery machine with ping pong balls.

42:52 Speaker 5: Now, each team that is part of the draft lottery is assigned a random set of four numbers of a combination of four numbers. If you've got a worst record, you have more combinations. So essentially, right now San Jose is the worst team in the league. They have an eighteen point five percent there's eighteen point five percent odds, an eighteen point five percent chance that they're going to get the number one draft pick, so they get one hundred and eighty five combinations. Is essentially how it works.

43:29 Speaker 5: Now, within these these sixteen teams, only number one and number two are determined by the lottery. The rest are in order of the regular season standings. So this season ended right now, the San Jose Sharks are number one in the worst at number eight right now, so it's all going to you know, we still have a number of games left, you know, ten, eleven, twelve, depending on your season, so this could change a little bit, but basically it goes in the order of regular season standings. Now, no team can win the lottery more than twice in five years starting right now, from twenty twenty two, because that's when they change the rules.

44:18 Speaker 1: Right because what happened. Chicago won two years in a row.

44:22 Speaker 5: So ago one, Yeah, Chicago won, and they could win two years in a row, but they cannot win again within the five years, so Chicago, So if we go back a few years, Chicago won one year. San Jose Sharks won last year, so I so if the Sharks won again, this year. Great, they could do that, but then they're out for the next three years as far as far as winning the draft lottery.

44:48 Speaker 2: So if we look at this, just because I just pulled up the standings in the league, right right now, Chicago's thirty one.

44:58 Speaker 6: San Jose is thirty two, two worse teams in the leagues.

45:01 Speaker 2: Yep, So by logic, they would they would have the better odd So if we didn't have a draft lottery, San Jose would pick first, Chicago would pick second, and right now, then it would be Nashville Flyers and on down.

45:18 Speaker 6: Because of the draft lottery, the.

45:20 Speaker 5: Sixteen worst teams right now, the sixteen teams who aren't going to be making the playoffs all have a chance to go in there. Now, there's one caveat, and this was one of the things they change in twenty twenty one is you can only move up ten spaces. So right now Calgary is in the sixteenth space. Yes, they cannot get the number one draft pick. Okay, they can't move up that high, but they can move up, so depending on how high up somebody. Now the Bruins are an eighth. So let's just say we end up winning the draft lottery, we move up to number one.

45:59 Speaker 5: San Jose ups to number two. Now again this is then there's one more pick. Whoever gets number two, let's just say it's Seattle. Well, now San Jose drops to the third pick, so it really determines the first three, even though the first two are part of the lottery.

46:16 Speaker 1: Interesting, So why do I remember? Uh maybe this was two years ago? They got on TV and they were showing us cards of the top like of the ten.

46:33 Speaker 6: Uh yeah, that was a mix up with Kevin. Was that was that the Connor Bdard?

46:41 Speaker 5: That was the counter Badard draft And that's actually when I started getting really interested in it.

46:46 Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, why were they like and again, you know, all of this is supposed to be done top secret, but there was speculation that there was maybe some monkeying around that went on behind the scenes, so that that first pick fell order to the black box.

47:08 Speaker 7: Because they are happened in the NBA too, where there have been that conversation about oh, yeah, they just put more ping pong balls in for this team to just up their odds.

47:20 Speaker 6: So there are they put in.

47:21 Speaker 5: Fourteen ping pong balls and there are one thousand and one combinations that can come of it. They knocked out one because otherwise it's not even apparently, so everybody has that equal chance. Now again, it's not exactly an equal chance. Right now, the Sharks have eighteen point five percent odds. The Bruins at number eight have a six percent odd of getting that number one pick because the number of chances that you get. So I don't, uh, the whole conspiracy theory thing, I remember all of that, and it just seems like maybe they could do it, but I don't know.

48:02 Speaker 1: Of the commission was right. And the commissioner doesn't do it.

48:06 Speaker 5: It was no, it's it's actually an independent agency that does it, like a counting agency.

48:13 Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, But like who's there in the room when they're doing it. I don't even think that Betman is typically even in the room.

48:24 Speaker 1: Maybe that was a COVID thing. It could have been COVID. I don't know. It all blends together now, right who knows.

48:33 Speaker 5: He is? But but they do, I mean, they do a whole but it is kind of fun to watch, and you know, it's like they do a I mean, it really is like a ten minute process that they stretch it out to half hour.

48:56 Speaker 5: Now, let's just say, because a team can only move up ten spots, let's just say, you know, as we're saying that, that the the Calgary ends up winning, you know, winning the number one.

49:11 Speaker 5: That means again, as standings are today, San Jose remains number one, okay, but Calgary would then knock down the people below it.

49:20 Speaker 1: So that's part of what happens.

49:23 Speaker 5: Yeah. The other piece, somebody did ask me what happens if a lottery draft team doesn't have a first round pick. I can find no information about that because I don't think that ever happens. I don't think any of these teams that are that are vying for the draft lottery are given away their first round picks for any period of time. You know, everybody, And again, in a perfect draft, without any uh trading and maneuvering, everybody has one. You could have treated it away we have traded our first round piece away, but we were a better team where we were not part of this product.

50:02 Speaker 5: We could have more than first, more than one first round pick, but we would not get to be in the draft lottery more than once.

50:10 Speaker 1: Right, yep, yes, so.

50:12 Speaker 5: We get we get one shot at that even if we had traded away. A lot of times a team will do a protected pick. So a protected pick might might be I'm going to trade you this player for a first round pick, but the team that has given me that first round pick may protect that and say unless it's top ten, in which case then it gets deferred for another year. Sometimes they work out how that works. A lot of times it will get deferred for another year so that you can still have that first round but you're not going to get that top ten pick.

50:49 Speaker 5: So that's that is when you hear about a protected pick. Now, Mars Shan also had a protected pick. We can debate all we want about how we feel about that, but what he had was actually a conditional pick. So it's a little bit different in that there was certain things that have to happen in order for that to be a first round right now, it's what's called right now, he has a twenty twenty seven conditional second round if the Panthers make the playoffs and go on to the up through the playoff system, as long as they get to the second round and he's played fifty percent, then that first round moves to a twenty twenty seven or twenty twenty eight pick.

51:33 Speaker 5: Now, again, the reason that it's one of the two years is because if it's a top ten pick, it's going to be pushed out to the next year. So that's why you sometimes will see that it's not always for this year, it might be for the next year.

51:48 Speaker 8: Which makes them great even more maddening because yeah, it's right so far, and I want to get into this debate, but you know the likelihood that Florida is going to get into two rounds and the fact that he's potentially going to be stepping on the ice yea on Friday.

52:11 Speaker 1: Yeah, god damn. Now. Brandon Carlow's trade to the Leafs also had a conditional element as well. I think, no, not conditional, protected.

52:26 Speaker 5: Protected, And again that's where they are protecting their top draft pick, but they're still allowing it to be so if it's going to be one of those, you know, top ten or whatever. Yeah, then it's going to be pushed out to the following year or again depending on how it's how they they've made that deal. But that's when you're hearing about protected or conditional. It's going to be dependent on where people end up.

52:52 Speaker 5: The other interesting thing, and this is generally in the draft, but it pertains to the draft lottery, is when you look and you can One of the websites that I actually like is tank athon.

53:09 Speaker 5: Yeah, so I recommend for people, and they have it for NHL, NBA, Baseball, all of that, so you can you can look up different things. They also have a draft simulator in there, or a lottery simulator, so you can play around and see, oh, what happens if Boston gets it, where do they move up? What does that happen to the other teams? That sort of thing, and that's kind of fun. But when you're looking online and seeing, Okay, what order are people in right now?

53:34 Speaker 1: And what order is the draft?

53:36 Speaker 5: Again as of today, we don't know actually until after the playoffs, the full order of the draft.

53:44 Speaker 1: The draft right now is scheduled for June twenty seventh and twenty eighth, and we will.

53:49 Speaker 5: Know the first sixteen picks long before then because that's going to be the teams that are not in the playoffs. Right. The rest of it goes down to regular season, but the playoffs play into it because interesting seventeen to twenty four is if you didn't win your division or play in the conference final, you're going to be in there. Right. Twenty five to twenty eight, you won the division but not the conference. If you lose the conference, you're at twenty nine and thirty. The runner up to the Stanley Cup is always the thirty first, and the Stanley Cup winners always picks last, So there is a little bit in there.

54:31 Speaker 5: If there's a tie within there, it goes back to the points you had in the regular season, but the playoff teams play into it a little bit different. So that's now when we're looking at here's the picks. Well, we only really know how it plays out for today. No after the draft lottery, which will either be May fifth or sixth.

54:52 Speaker 2: I mean I just saw posting on ts in Canada said it's either the fifth or the sixth.

54:57 Speaker 5: Of May right, it depends on what the playf off schedule is, which day they do it. So they've got to sort of see how the playoffs are playing out and then they'll and then they'll do it either May fifth or May six, So we will know for the sixteen and how they'll do it. We won't know the next sixteen until we're seeing how the playoffs are playing out.

55:19 Speaker 5: But when you're looking online, when you're looking online at these picks, it will say, say, pick seventeen is I'm the Boston Bruins, but acquired from you know, the Chicago Blackhawks when we gave them a bunch of years last year or something. So it will actually list that on there. Because so now what happens is that's actually Chicago's pick.

55:44 Speaker 1: But the Bruins are taking it.

55:46 Speaker 5: And again not I don't have one off the top of my head, but it's actually Chicago's pick, So it remains with Chicago. It's not where does Boston fit into it? It's where did where did Chicago fall in this first round? And then the Bruins are taking it basically from them. Yeah, so that and that goes through all of the rounds. But you know, the first round is the round for us this year that actually does matter.

56:12 Speaker 1: Yeah, and then it's trades, the trades. Trades can start again as soon as the team is basically out of the running, whether it's they just don't make it into the playoffs. So the season ends on April seventeenth, and presumably by the eighteenth nineteenth the playoffs start, teams that don't make it can start trading, and picks are part of trade. So another thing that kind of throws what does the draft order look like? It kind of throws it up in the air a little bit more because that could very much so be part of a trade so.

56:54 Speaker 5: Well, and they can trade right up until they get called. So you see during the draft flopper. You see it more during the draft. But it may be that, all right, we're up next, but the person we want is you know, or maybe we're up in two, but we really want this person, so we want to get that chance to pick them. So I'm gonna flip flop with the team in front of me because I really want this player, and so so I might flip flop there, or maybe you know, there's two people ahead of me, and I'm gonna trade around so there's some worse trading that goes on right up until the last minute.

57:33 Speaker 5: Some years are a little bit more exciting in that respect than others. Sometimes you see a lot more of it. Some years everybody's just like, yep, here's where I am. I'm going to pick here and that works out just fine. Yeah, So there is a lot that goes into it. You know, I've really over the last few years gotten much more interested in it. I think it's just been kind of cool to see how it plays out. And again, it was Connor Bedard, who we know, oh I just adore, but the Connor bdar when they started referring to it as the Connor Bardard Draft very specifically, but you know, it brought some level of excitement to it.

58:12 Speaker 5: What was funny with the Connor Bardard Draft was when Chicago won the pick, well, we'll see who we choose.

58:22 Speaker 5: We all knew who they were going to choose last year the macleans Telabrini Draft. The minute that the Sharks won it, they said, can't wait to draft him.

58:36 Speaker 5: We knew they were going to pick back. They choose back everybody was happy. Yeah, we knew they were going to choose Connor. Why they were playing these games of la Why why the Chicago for you? That's the that's the original six, that's the old time hockey. It's it's ridiculous.

58:53 Speaker 5: Now there's other drafts when it might not be so clear cut, but come on, right, really, but I found that interesting only because we all kind of knew who was going first.

59:12 Speaker 5: Most people thought it was going to be Mac, but there was you know, there could have been a couple of others that it might have been. There was never a question about Connor Bdard going first, really, and I think that's been the case for for you know, like the Connor McDavid.

59:30 Speaker 5: So it does I think there's something to that that makes the draft lottery a little bit more interesting because you know what everybody's playing for instead of just I want that first pick and then well, who's going to be a good fit for this team, who's going to be a good fit for that team? Instead it's who you know, who's going to get Connor because you want the hockey player named them Connor him got.

59:57 Speaker 2: The last time I had any interest in any draft aft was the Taylor Hall Tyler Sagan year because they were running neck and neck right down to the end of their seasons in terms of who was going to go first or second. Yeah, they've finished out, and I was praying that Taylor Hall stock dropped just a little bit because we had the Wolves have the second pick, and I wanted them to pick.
