1:30 Speaker 1: I went out and played a quick nine holes yesterday afternoon,

1:34 Speaker 1: and by the time we got to the ninth hole,

1:37 Speaker 1: the sun was already setting, which to me is obnoxious.

1:42 Speaker 1: I do not enjoy this time of year. But be

1:46 Speaker 1: that as it may, we certainly got We have a

1:49 Speaker 1: lot of hockey to talk about mostly good hockey, mostly

1:54 Speaker 1: good hockey. We are going to today talk about how

1:59 Speaker 1: we feel about Marco Sturm if he's pushing the right buttons.

2:03 Speaker 1: At this point in time, We've got a couple of injuries, unfortunately,

2:08 Speaker 1: that we need to talk about and the adjustments that

2:12 Speaker 1: have been made in the lineup as a result of

2:15 Speaker 1: these injuries. We also want to talk about, finally, the

2:20 Speaker 1: youth movement on this current roster making a little noise

2:25 Speaker 1: for themselves. Right but very far we dive into all things.

2:31 Speaker 1: Boston Bruins will take our usual spin around the rink.

2:36 Speaker 1: And I don't know about you, but it seems like

2:38 Speaker 1: there's not a lot of hot news happening right now

2:42 Speaker 1: around the league. Everyone's, you know, going about their going

2:46 Speaker 1: about their business relatively quietly. But there was a little

2:50 Speaker 1: scary thing that happened in the Toronto Maple Leafs game

2:54 Speaker 1: recently where Chris Tannev had to be taken off the

2:58 Speaker 1: ice in a stretcher against the Philadelphia Flyers. I read

3:03 Speaker 1: the report this morning. He's back home and resting. But

3:08 Speaker 1: you know, regardless of how we feel about any franchise

3:11 Speaker 1: and rivalries, the last thing anybody wants to see in hockey,

3:16 Speaker 1: is a player get stretched off the ice. Yeah, that

3:19 Speaker 1: was crazy to see.

3:21 Speaker 2: I didn't catch it live, although I know some folks

3:24 Speaker 2: in our Discord group did. I was watching the replay

3:28 Speaker 2: clip and it seems like it's just one of those

3:32 Speaker 2: really freak accidents because it didn't look like a particular,

3:38 Speaker 2: you know, crazy hit or falling to the ice in

3:42 Speaker 2: some sort of dangerous way. It was a mid ice collision.

3:47 Speaker 2: The only thing I can kind of speculate on is

3:51 Speaker 2: the whiplash kind of situation. And he has concussion history,

3:56 Speaker 2: so I can only imagine that that's what actually happened,

4:00 Speaker 2: because it's not like he slammed to the boards or

4:02 Speaker 2: something like that.

4:03 Speaker 1: So it's scary to see it.

4:05 Speaker 2: It's awful, quite frankly, when a player has to get

4:08 Speaker 2: taken off the ice in that way. So hopefully he

4:12 Speaker 2: recovers soon. And he just had come back. Chris Tannep

4:17 Speaker 2: had just come back. It was his first game back

4:20 Speaker 2: after missing several games from a prior injury. So again,

4:25 Speaker 2: you know, regardless of what color sweater, you know, none

4:29 Speaker 2: of us ever want to see that, so wish him well.

4:32 Speaker 2: The other piece of news is it seems like the

4:35 Speaker 2: Tampa Bay Lightning are the hottest team in the league

4:38 Speaker 2: right now, where they've won five games in a row,

4:41 Speaker 2: and you know, I know, at the start of the

4:44 Speaker 2: season when everyone was making their you know, preseason predictions,

4:48 Speaker 2: the Tampa Bay Lightning is a team that a lot

4:50 Speaker 2: of people have on their radar to be in the

4:55 Speaker 2: playoff mix. Yeah, and what was crazy is the fact

4:59 Speaker 2: that they they had a pretty horrible start. They fell

5:04 Speaker 2: at the starting line, so to speak, and they were

5:06 Speaker 2: at bottom for a little bit, and they've been steadily

5:10 Speaker 2: crawling their way right back up to the top. I mean,

5:12 Speaker 2: the pros and cons of this condensed season is you

5:17 Speaker 2: don't sit around and wait to see if whatever adjustments

5:21 Speaker 2: here and there are going to work. It's make the

5:25 Speaker 2: adjustment get the results from that pretty quickly. And I

5:29 Speaker 2: think Boston has benefited also from that kind of experiment

5:35 Speaker 2: because there's very little time in between. Granted, this means

5:40 Speaker 2: maybe there's less time for practice, but I mean it's

5:43 Speaker 2: more time for execution, and if you don't have a

5:46 Speaker 2: lot of time to waste. I think there are teams

5:50 Speaker 2: that are benefiting from this condensed schedule, just like Tampa

5:53 Speaker 2: is able to just make those changes and go from there.

5:57 Speaker 1: Right, And I don't think the Bruins have been one

5:59 Speaker 1: of those teams that's been able to benefit from that.

6:01 Speaker 1: And Cam Nearly spoke to that during the nests and

6:05 Speaker 1: broadcast during one of the games this week, and that

6:08 Speaker 1: the Bruins and the Calgary Flames have played the most

6:12 Speaker 1: games out of any team in the league right now,

6:15 Speaker 1: which you know is I'm not quite sure I understand

6:18 Speaker 1: how that happens. But he alluded to the fact that,

6:21 Speaker 1: you know, they haven't had a lot of time to

6:26 Speaker 1: practice and work on this defensive you know, structure system

6:31 Speaker 1: here that we keep hearing about. Hopefully that is going

6:35 Speaker 1: to start leveling off here in the coming weeks. We

6:40 Speaker 1: shall see, but every team is going to be subjected

6:44 Speaker 1: to this at some point this season because of that

6:47 Speaker 1: Olympic break.

6:49 Speaker 2: Yeah, well, so you know, to your point, yes, Boston

6:54 Speaker 2: doesn't have the time to experiment in a practice environment

6:58 Speaker 2: which is safe for However, they are throwing things out

7:04 Speaker 2: there and seeing if they're going to work in real

7:06 Speaker 2: time in game situations, and for good or for bad,

7:11 Speaker 2: at least they're not then wasting those precious few practices

7:15 Speaker 2: on something that might not then actually work out well

7:20 Speaker 2: on the ice during the game, so you know, a

7:22 Speaker 2: little pros and cons for that. But this right now

7:26 Speaker 2: is the longest I think little break stretch that Boston

7:32 Speaker 2: has had since the start of the season, which is

7:34 Speaker 2: is they played on Saturday, they had Sunday, well I

7:37 Speaker 2: don't know if they had it off, but there's no

7:38 Speaker 2: game on Sunday, no game.

7:40 Speaker 1: There was also practice on Sunday, I believe, and then well,

7:45 Speaker 1: there's a team There was a team event or an

7:49 Speaker 1: event that was together for season ticket holders on Sunday

7:53 Speaker 1: that the players needed to attend for a couple of hours,

7:58 Speaker 1: so I would imagine that they'll be back on the ice.

8:02 Speaker 2: Crap this thing, yes say, but ultimately what ends up

8:06 Speaker 2: happening is I believe they have three games pretty pretty

8:13 Speaker 2: much in regular like close succession every two days. Then

8:16 Speaker 2: they'll have another mini like two day break, and then

8:20 Speaker 2: they are effectively going straight every other day from November

8:28 Speaker 2: eleventh all the way through November twenty ninth before they

8:31 Speaker 2: have their next two day no game break, which is

8:36 Speaker 2: absolutely bonkers.

8:37 Speaker 1: It is every other day a hockey game, which not

8:40 Speaker 1: great for us either. That'll watch in all these games.

8:43 Speaker 1: It's nice to have a little respit from the game. Now,

8:47 Speaker 1: did I bite my tongue? Because come July and August,

8:51 Speaker 1: I'm I'm dying for hockey.

8:53 Speaker 2: So I have to remind myself this is this is

8:56 Speaker 2: this is good, this is good for us.

8:58 Speaker 1: And during that strict you just talked about it, will

9:02 Speaker 1: it'll take them out to the West Coast for that

9:05 Speaker 1: annual the annual road trip. But be that as it may,

9:10 Speaker 1: we did. We have had some good hockey finally come

9:15 Speaker 1: across our radar here. But before we get into that,

9:21 Speaker 1: I want to talk about the injuries that right have

9:27 Speaker 1: just occurred. So we'll start quickly with the Jordan Harris

9:32 Speaker 1: injury and the fact that he's going to be out

9:36 Speaker 1: apparently for at least a couple of months to repair

9:40 Speaker 1: a right ankle fracture, which is unfortunate because you know,

9:45 Speaker 1: I saw some good potential in this player.

9:49 Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it was huge his contributions. He was doing

9:53 Speaker 2: a really great job, especially when Hampus was out, and

9:57 Speaker 2: I honestly, I didn't cat what had happened to him.

10:02 Speaker 2: It wasn't even obvious that he had been injured while playing,

10:07 Speaker 2: because you know, play hadn't stopped. So either he was

10:11 Speaker 2: just in beast mode that all time, or maybe it

10:16 Speaker 2: was just one of those injuries that maybe it didn't

10:19 Speaker 2: straight up hurt in a way that kind of was

10:22 Speaker 2: alarm bells for him. But whatever it was, he got

10:26 Speaker 2: attention pretty quickly and basically immediately underwent surgery, which tells

10:31 Speaker 2: you that, okay, well that's a pretty serious situation and hopefully,

10:35 Speaker 2: you know, ever since Tory Krug hurt his.

10:39 Speaker 1: Ankle, I always get so nervous.

10:41 Speaker 2: I get so nervous when I hear about a player

10:44 Speaker 2: having ankle surgery because his Tory Krug's career basically has

10:50 Speaker 2: come to an end prematurely because of just weird healing

10:56 Speaker 2: coming from a an ankle injury. So finger across that

11:00 Speaker 2: Harris recovers really well, I mean he's super young, so

11:04 Speaker 2: you know, I don't know.

11:06 Speaker 1: Yeah, and I had him, you know, pegged for taking

11:11 Speaker 1: Masonri's spot, which he you know, I think he has

11:15 Speaker 1: the potential to do. And well we'll get to Mason

11:18 Speaker 1: Laurai as we start breaking down the week that was

11:23 Speaker 1: for the Bruins. But yeah, I hope that he will

11:27 Speaker 1: recover quickly and then you know, be able to, you know,

11:31 Speaker 1: get back on the ice to add to the defensive

11:35 Speaker 1: depth that the Ruins I think so certainly need, especially

11:39 Speaker 1: if you are going to be focusing on your defensive structure.

11:44 Speaker 1: The other big injury that just occurred is, you know,

11:48 Speaker 1: we get one lint Home back and the other lind

11:51 Speaker 1: Home goes out. So Bruins get Hampus lind Home back

11:54 Speaker 1: in the lineup and lo and behold, Elias lind Home

11:59 Speaker 1: costs out with an injury. And the latest information that

12:03 Speaker 1: I could find this morning was that we know it's

12:06 Speaker 1: some type of a lower body injury. We know it's

12:10 Speaker 1: it has to be right. We have almost like right,

12:13 Speaker 1: I know, I know, but you know how hard They

12:15 Speaker 1: won't Yeah, yeah, yeah, they will not by a body's

12:20 Speaker 1: part ever. But he he left the Sabers game in

12:26 Speaker 1: the second period and didn't return. Apparently Elias hadn't MRI

12:32 Speaker 1: on Friday, October thirty. First. I don't think there's been

12:35 Speaker 1: any subsequent update on the results of the MRI, but

12:40 Speaker 1: what we do know is he expect he is expected

12:44 Speaker 1: to be out for a few weeks, which is not

12:49 Speaker 1: awesome idea.

12:50 Speaker 3: But considering you know, he's he he has most certainly

12:57 Speaker 3: turned a page in his career in Boston, and so

13:02 Speaker 3: to see him only so many games in now he's

13:07 Speaker 3: got to be out and stopping some of that momentum.

13:11 Speaker 2: It's such a bummer for him because we could see it,

13:15 Speaker 2: We could see what we got him for why he

13:20 Speaker 2: was signed, you know. So it's really frustrating, but the

13:24 Speaker 2: promising thing at least for right now, although who knows,

13:28 Speaker 2: because things can always change, things can get backdated. Right now,

13:32 Speaker 2: he is just on IR, so that's a positive thing.

13:39 Speaker 1: I think they'll.

13:40 Speaker 2: Probably have him on IR for as long as it

13:45 Speaker 2: takes to either make a decision about what's going to

13:48 Speaker 2: happen next for him, if it's going to be actually

13:53 Speaker 2: a lengthy period of time, because I would assume that

13:58 Speaker 2: they would be very conservative in terms of let's go

14:03 Speaker 2: do any kind of surgical anything unless it's like you

14:06 Speaker 2: have to like a like a fracture, like a broken bone,

14:09 Speaker 2: where you time is of the essence that if you

14:11 Speaker 2: don't do surgery, you're gonna make things worse. So I

14:15 Speaker 2: wouldn't be surprised if there's some of that that's happening

14:17 Speaker 2: and they're just kind of waiting to see how that

14:21 Speaker 2: develops and how his body responds. So if things don't

14:27 Speaker 2: look like they're going in the right direction, then I

14:30 Speaker 2: would definitely expect them to put him on LTR to

14:34 Speaker 2: bring in.

14:35 Speaker 1: Then someone else if necessary.

14:38 Speaker 2: But they honestly, it seems like they have everything in

14:42 Speaker 2: hand with the with the young guys that they've brought in.

14:45 Speaker 2: I mean, I'm not saying that he's not missed, because

14:47 Speaker 2: he certainly is, but it's been okay.

14:52 Speaker 1: Well, he's going to be. I mean, for sure he's

14:54 Speaker 1: going to be missed, right you can you can patch

14:58 Speaker 1: things together for the short term. I think the biggest

15:02 Speaker 1: void is going to be with respect to Eland holmes injury,

15:08 Speaker 1: is the power play, because all of his goals thus

15:11 Speaker 1: far this season have come on the power play, and

15:15 Speaker 1: the power play has been, for lack of a more

15:20 Speaker 1: technical descriptor, you know, it hasn't been as impressive as

15:25 Speaker 1: one would hope. But I think five to five you

15:29 Speaker 1: might be okay. Where you're going to have to build

15:33 Speaker 1: the void is likely on those on the first power

15:37 Speaker 1: play unit, but you know, we'll we'll talk a little

15:39 Speaker 1: bit more in depth about that. What I want to

15:43 Speaker 1: start this episode with is the question of has Marco

15:49 Speaker 1: Sturm finally started to get his message across and pushing

15:55 Speaker 1: the right buttons. Now we'll we'll, we'll start the car

16:00 Speaker 1: conversation with the just god awful game against the Ottawa

16:07 Speaker 1: Senators where the Bruins lost seven to two. And I

16:10 Speaker 1: think we said all we needed to say about that

16:12 Speaker 1: game in our snapshots, but suffice it to say that

16:18 Speaker 1: they had nothing, absolutely nothing going on in that game,

16:23 Speaker 1: pretty much from from top to bottom. And as the

16:26 Speaker 1: game went along, I noticed that I did not like

16:32 Speaker 1: the body language coming from just about everybody in a

16:37 Speaker 1: Bruin's uniform, including including the coaching staff. Particularly to me,

16:43 Speaker 1: Pasta did not look engaged at all in that game,

16:48 Speaker 1: and that gave me a lot of pause for concern, like,

16:52 Speaker 1: what is what is happening here? These players shutting down already?

16:58 Speaker 1: Because that was one thing we had talked about in

17:01 Speaker 1: previous episodes, that this team didn't seem to have a

17:07 Speaker 1: willingness to give up, whereas in that game against Ottawa

17:12 Speaker 1: it seemed like they they gave up. Now, the Bruins

17:18 Speaker 1: started off decently in that game because Morgan Geeky put

17:22 Speaker 1: them up one to nothing, and then Skitzlert as his

17:26 Speaker 1: normal you know, let me, someone's gonna touch me and

17:30 Speaker 1: I'm going to take a dive, and the refs fall

17:33 Speaker 1: for it. They're on a power play and Autowa ties

17:37 Speaker 1: the game up one to one. The Bruins had a

17:41 Speaker 1: decent first period and then when the wheels fell off

17:45 Speaker 1: the bus, they look and fell off a cliff in

17:48 Speaker 1: that game.

17:50 Speaker 2: Yeah, it was as as bad as the Anaheim game was,

17:57 Speaker 2: because that prior to the Senator's game, that was the

18:01 Speaker 2: worst game that they had played all season.

18:05 Speaker 1: As bad as that game.

18:06 Speaker 2: Had been, at least what the Bruins that we saw

18:13 Speaker 2: on the ice for that circus performance was the we'll

18:17 Speaker 2: call them the new Bruins, the we're gonna keep going,

18:21 Speaker 2: We're gonna keep playing. We're not gonna fold like a

18:24 Speaker 2: deck of cards. We're just gonna keep playing our game.

18:27 Speaker 2: And that game against the Dock and we saw that

18:31 Speaker 2: when you maintain that positive attitude, that no quit attitude,

18:36 Speaker 2: you can start to get somewhere. And they ended up,

18:39 Speaker 2: you know, scoring two goals at the end there to

18:42 Speaker 2: really make it seem like there was a chance that

18:44 Speaker 2: they could recover that game. The game against the Senators

18:49 Speaker 2: was a copy and paste from last season. I don't

18:52 Speaker 2: know obviously what happened why in this particular instance, this

18:58 Speaker 2: game was so reminiscent of what we saw from them

19:04 Speaker 2: last year. You know, certainly, were there things that happened

19:10 Speaker 2: to them that were out of their control that put

19:13 Speaker 2: them behind the eight ball. Absolutely, that's something that is

19:18 Speaker 2: always a possibility in any game that they play, any

19:20 Speaker 2: team plays. But I just cannot explain what had happened.

19:29 Speaker 2: I mean, they lost complete control over themselves. They left

19:37 Speaker 2: sway and hanging. Granted it wasn't necessarily his best night,

19:42 Speaker 2: but perhaps it just got to the point where I

19:45 Speaker 2: don't recall necessarily him being you know, blatantly terrible or

19:52 Speaker 2: you know, like completely out of position and not doing

19:55 Speaker 2: his job necessarily. And also, quite frankly, the Senators had

20:00 Speaker 2: his number for years. This is a team for whatever

20:03 Speaker 2: reason he struggles against. Every goalie has that team, so

20:09 Speaker 2: that Senators are his, which stinks because they're in our divisions.

20:13 Speaker 1: Not very helpful.

20:15 Speaker 2: It was.

20:17 Speaker 1: It was horrible.

20:18 Speaker 2: It was the worst game I've ever seen ever ever,

20:22 Speaker 2: And and I'll take it a step further where and

20:27 Speaker 2: and this wasn't exclusively on this pairing, but in this

20:32 Speaker 2: Autawa game.

20:33 Speaker 1: It was glaring to me that Mason, Lauri and Charlie

20:37 Speaker 1: mcavoyd as a defensive pairing are a train wreck together.

20:42 Speaker 1: They are an absolute train wreck together. Yeah, and so

20:48 Speaker 1: it you know, it doesn't appear that there's any kind

20:51 Speaker 1: of cohesiveness with the way that each of them plays

20:57 Speaker 1: or communication when they are out on the ice together. Yeah.

21:02 Speaker 1: In addition to that, this was a stat that I

21:06 Speaker 1: heard Brian Johnston, who does the radio broadcast for the Bruins,

21:12 Speaker 1: that game against Ottawa was the first time in seven

21:16 Speaker 1: years that the Bruins gave up four power play goals

21:20 Speaker 1: in one game. Wow. Not pretty no, not pretty no.

21:26 Speaker 1: And I can't quite.

21:28 Speaker 2: Put my finger on what the problem is necessarily with

21:34 Speaker 2: that particular pairing of Laura and McAvoy. We've talked about

21:40 Speaker 2: individual issues with each of those players, how we would

21:45 Speaker 2: really love to see Charlie be this kind of.

21:49 Speaker 1: Player, or.

21:51 Speaker 2: Laura he's great at this, but he needs to be

21:55 Speaker 2: more this.

21:57 Speaker 1: But then together.

22:00 Speaker 2: It's it becomes compounded.

22:03 Speaker 1: I guess I'm not gonna know. It is because the

22:06 Speaker 1: stage player has a distinct nature to their game. Charlie

22:10 Speaker 1: apparently can't play the game that we all need him

22:15 Speaker 1: to play and want him to play and know that

22:18 Speaker 1: he can play when he's worried about Yeah, is he

22:22 Speaker 1: going to islurai going to pinch at the wrong time,

22:25 Speaker 1: or is he going to pinch at the same time

22:27 Speaker 1: that I'm pinching, or is he going to you know,

22:30 Speaker 1: cough up the pup when I'm getting ready to do

22:32 Speaker 1: something else. So it's just not a cohesive, cohesive unit

22:38 Speaker 1: in any way, shape or form. So let's move forward

22:42 Speaker 1: then to the game against the New York Islanders, because

22:47 Speaker 1: you know, we also had alluded to the fact that

22:51 Speaker 1: we thought it might be time for young Mason Lauri

22:56 Speaker 1: to have a seat and watch the game from a

23:00 Speaker 1: far right or somebody needed to have a seat and

23:03 Speaker 1: watch the game from afar, because Marco kept talking about

23:07 Speaker 1: on more than one occasion in just recent weeks about

23:11 Speaker 1: guys not flying in everybody.

23:13 Speaker 2: Needs to inn By the way, the fact that we've

23:16 Speaker 2: heard him say that a couple of times, a couple

23:18 Speaker 2: of times massive concern.

23:20 Speaker 1: Right. I agree with you. I agree with you because

23:23 Speaker 1: it begs the question of what is going on here?

23:25 Speaker 1: Are they not listening? Is it right? The system too

23:28 Speaker 1: difficult to grasp? Or are guys not wanting to grasp

23:33 Speaker 1: the system. So so be that as it may. We

23:36 Speaker 1: will now move on to the game against the New

23:40 Speaker 1: York Islanders that the Ruins ended up winning five to two. Yeah,

23:45 Speaker 1: the game started off as poorly. Yes, it was a

23:51 Speaker 1: continuation of the night the night before. It was horrible.

23:55 Speaker 1: But I was like, here we go again, Here we

23:57 Speaker 1: go again, here we go again. So I'll let you

24:01 Speaker 1: take the lead on this game, because.

24:04 Speaker 2: Yeah, it was night and day. From that first period

24:08 Speaker 2: into the second period, it was almost like it was

24:11 Speaker 2: a completely new game. It was who knows, somebody said something,

24:16 Speaker 2: somebody did something, and they were completely different. They scored

24:22 Speaker 2: three unanswered goals. We had our powerplay goal by Bill

24:27 Speaker 2: Mason Laurai in this game, and Ractice Slinch Home Campus

24:31 Speaker 2: Slinch Home was back in the line there.

24:34 Speaker 1: Yes, yes, And.

24:38 Speaker 2: I want to say it was almost as if, I

24:45 Speaker 2: don't know, like just the switch went off in their

24:48 Speaker 2: heads and they're like, oh, this is what we actually

24:51 Speaker 2: need to do. You know, we've talked about in last

24:55 Speaker 2: week's podcast episode. We just need to see Boston take

24:59 Speaker 2: advantage of one more opportunity. One more opportunity can make

25:03 Speaker 2: a huge difference, and this was one of those games

25:06 Speaker 2: where that was the case, where we had that extra

25:11 Speaker 2: opportunity that they took advantage of in that power play,

26:09 Speaker 1: into the net. During this stretch of he's been Chasey

26:13 Speaker 1: Middlestat has been contributing. And I'm we're going a little

26:17 Speaker 1: off topic here, but I really like the chemistry that

26:21 Speaker 1: is developing between Casey middle Stat and Victor Ardwoodson. Yes, yes,

26:27 Speaker 1: we've just seen.

26:30 Speaker 2: What again, It just literally like a light switch has

26:33 Speaker 2: been has been flicked on. We now all of a

26:37 Speaker 2: sudden see all of the different parts moving in the

26:41 Speaker 2: way that they need to be moving, that they're doing

26:44 Speaker 2: their different kinds of jobs that are required of them,

26:48 Speaker 2: and ultimately I think that that is what has contributed

26:54 Speaker 2: over the last three games that the Bruins have played

26:57 Speaker 2: and have been able to win.

26:58 Speaker 1: So it tells me, more so than I.

27:03 Speaker 2: Felt earlier in this season thus far, that maybe the

27:07 Speaker 2: talent isn't really the issue that Okay, now they clearly

27:11 Speaker 2: have the ability to.

27:15 Speaker 1: Win games.

27:16 Speaker 2: They can win games decisively if they are doing their jobs.

27:21 Speaker 2: They clearly can. So now they are setting themselves up

27:25 Speaker 2: to this expectation that we are all going to have

27:28 Speaker 2: from here on out, especially after the Carolina game that

27:33 Speaker 2: we'll talk about shortly, but that was a massive expectation

27:40 Speaker 2: setter for well, there's been slow improvement during So we'll

27:44 Speaker 2: start with whatever happened in between the first and second

27:49 Speaker 2: period of the Islanders game where the Islanders scored on

27:54 Speaker 2: their first shot on goal and then shortly after that

28:00 Speaker 2: made it two to nothing.

28:01 Speaker 1: I don't know what happened in between periods of that game,

28:05 Speaker 1: if somebody said something. I hope that someone did, because

28:08 Speaker 1: I know what I would be saying if I was

28:11 Speaker 1: in that locker room. We're not doing this shit again tonight.

28:14 Speaker 1: Not at home. Not at home. And the Bruins came

28:18 Speaker 1: out a totally different team in that second period, to

28:23 Speaker 1: the point that when the Bruins scored three unanswered goals,

28:28 Speaker 1: Patrick Waw was forced to call a timeout, right, to

28:32 Speaker 1: call a timeout to get his team back in order again.

28:38 Speaker 1: And you know, the Bruins didn't take their foot off

28:40 Speaker 1: the gas for the most part. Even though they had

28:44 Speaker 1: a three to two lead going into the third period,

28:47 Speaker 1: they were able to extend that lead on another goal

28:51 Speaker 1: by Morgan Geeky. And I think they also killed off

28:55 Speaker 1: a four minute penalty in that game.

28:58 Speaker 2: Yeah, And I think again, if we take a step

29:03 Speaker 2: back and kind of look at these three games that

29:05 Speaker 2: they've won, and to your point of the slow progression

29:10 Speaker 2: of improvement and getting used to being in these new

29:15 Speaker 2: er lines, we've had a little bit of adjustment of

29:18 Speaker 2: lines that we've now seen for at least two games, right,

29:24 Speaker 2: Linholm has missed two games. This is allowing the team

29:29 Speaker 2: to also develop that chemistry getting used to each other,

29:34 Speaker 2: getting used to those particular line mats and pairings. And

29:39 Speaker 2: I think what we saw particularly in the Islanders game,

29:43 Speaker 2: because again it was two very different teams that we

29:46 Speaker 2: saw play. It wasn't just that the Islanders are what

29:52 Speaker 2: I've started to call like they're a little bit of

29:53 Speaker 2: the wild West hockey. It's it's a lot of young kids.

29:57 Speaker 2: They're they're not particularly great. That can be a lot

30:00 Speaker 2: of fun because they might have a lot of chances,

30:02 Speaker 2: they take.

30:03 Speaker 1: Advantage of chances.

30:05 Speaker 2: So because there have been definitely games that we've seen

30:08 Speaker 2: Boston play where they win and it's like, well, did

30:13 Speaker 2: they win because they were actually the better team or

30:16 Speaker 2: was the other did they win because the other team

30:19 Speaker 2: was just worse and they kind of got the win

30:22 Speaker 2: by default in that case.

30:25 Speaker 1: Here, I don't think.

30:26 Speaker 2: That the Islanders necessarily got worse. I think they stayed

30:33 Speaker 2: relatively stable and the same, and it was Boston that

30:37 Speaker 2: truly made the improvements that we saw and continued to

30:42 Speaker 2: see into the next two games.

30:46 Speaker 1: And one of the notable big changes for me, well

30:50 Speaker 1: couple of big changes, right, Myren Instadina as has been

30:56 Speaker 1: holding his own on that top line The other big

31:00 Speaker 1: change for me, and I'm praying that Marco Stern doesn't

31:05 Speaker 1: change this for the foreseeable future, is Zadora and Macavoy

31:11 Speaker 1: playing together. They are a couple. They have been in

31:15 Speaker 1: this stretch wrecking balls, and I absolutely love it. I

31:20 Speaker 1: absolutely love it. Yeah, it's it takes me right back

31:25 Speaker 1: to mighty ucks.

31:27 Speaker 2: We've got our bash brothers here because you've and I honestly,

31:31 Speaker 2: I feel like we've probably talked about this combination in

31:36 Speaker 2: theory before in the past, during a summer episode or whatnot,

31:41 Speaker 2: and this cannot be the first time that we've seen

31:45 Speaker 2: the two of them play together.

31:47 Speaker 1: But maybe it is. But but I you know, I

31:49 Speaker 1: think I think we've seen snippets. Yeah, we haven't seen

31:54 Speaker 1: as I don't think as large of a sample size

31:58 Speaker 1: as we have seen in four game stretch herege Yes.

32:03 Speaker 2: And Zadorov is really playing kind of a different game

32:09 Speaker 2: now too. He's really really just locked in and he's

32:14 Speaker 2: doing all the really good things that we saw from

32:18 Speaker 2: him periodically in the last season. He's been a much

32:22 Speaker 2: more consistent defenceman, a really solid, classic defensive defenceman. And

32:30 Speaker 2: when we had our summer episode where we talked about

32:32 Speaker 2: the different roles and the jobs of the different pairings,

32:35 Speaker 2: and what is an ideal pairing situation. I don't think

32:41 Speaker 2: that we really considered pairing Charlie McVoy with someone who

32:48 Speaker 2: was a defensive defenseman, because Juckie isn't. He's kind of

32:53 Speaker 2: a bit of a He's a little bit of a

32:55 Speaker 2: unicorn in the sense that he's not quite the pure

33:00 Speaker 2: two way defenseman like you would see hampasil at Holme,

33:04 Speaker 2: because he's not nearly as offensively minded as him or

33:09 Speaker 2: as offensively minded as LORI wants to be.

33:14 Speaker 1: He's also not super defensive defenceman like Carlo was or

33:19 Speaker 1: Zudorov is. So he's kind of like this, I don't know,

33:23 Speaker 1: in between something. And so I think for the longest

33:27 Speaker 1: time we all assumed that, well, for him, you have

33:32 Speaker 1: to pair him with an offensive defenseman. But apparently we.

33:38 Speaker 2: See him in his best role yet with a defensive defenseman.

33:44 Speaker 2: And quite frankly, it makes a lot of sense considering

33:47 Speaker 2: what we have seen from him over the last several seasons,

33:51 Speaker 2: where when he was in positions and partnered with people

33:57 Speaker 2: who required even let's say even a touch more supervision.

34:04 Speaker 2: And I'm talking about going all the way back to

34:06 Speaker 2: Matt Grizzlick is what I love to say about him,

34:09 Speaker 2: the same thing I'm saying about Mason Laurai, which.

34:11 Speaker 1: Is, when he's good, he's great. And he's bad, my god,

34:15 Speaker 1: is it horrible.

34:16 Speaker 2: And he had to periodically, you know, fix his mistakes

34:24 Speaker 2: and be aware of not just the play in front

34:26 Speaker 2: of him, but what his partner is doing. And I

34:28 Speaker 2: think for the first time in a really long time,

34:31 Speaker 2: probably since he was paired with Zadino Chara, he doesn't.

34:35 Speaker 1: Have to take that response. He can relax. It seems

34:40 Speaker 1: like he can relax, play, play a game, play his game,

34:45 Speaker 1: take a risk knowing that you know, Ze number two

34:50 Speaker 1: is going to be back there, you know, pretty much

34:52 Speaker 1: ready to knock someone block off. So you know, I

34:55 Speaker 1: think it's been beneficial to Charlie's game, and I do hope,

35:00 Speaker 1: I do hope that Marco maintains that pairing for the

35:06 Speaker 1: foreseeable future. I know, you know, at some point, at

35:09 Speaker 1: some point they're gonna need to figure out what to

35:11 Speaker 1: do with Mason Laurai. Now, Mason Laurai missed. He set

35:15 Speaker 1: out the game against the last two the last two games.

35:21 Speaker 2: He did play a game where he was paired with

35:23 Speaker 2: someone else though didn't he.

35:26 Speaker 1: Yes, I don't know if they had him with Peak

35:28 Speaker 1: at one point in time. I think so, I think

35:31 Speaker 1: they had in mind. I think they were just trying

35:33 Speaker 1: to Yeah, I mean, I'm good. I'm good with them

35:39 Speaker 1: giving him the opportunity right to sit and watch and

35:43 Speaker 1: learn and understand what the expectations of you are in

35:49 Speaker 1: this defensive minded structure that we're trying to get everyone

35:54 Speaker 1: to buy into EAR and to implement. Okay, so we'll

35:58 Speaker 1: we'll we'll see what happens. We'll see what happens with that.

36:06 Speaker 1: which was now tell me if you was surprised by

36:10 Speaker 1: this game against the Sabers. The Bruins ended up winning

36:13 Speaker 1: four to three in overtime and it was a second

36:16 Speaker 1: start in a row fors Copersalo and I don't know.

36:21 Speaker 1: I found that a little bit surprising, but also in

36:25 Speaker 1: a good way, because I want to give Marco Sterm

36:30 Speaker 1: some credit for saying to himself, listen, I got what

36:33 Speaker 1: I needed to get out of these guys. In the

36:36 Speaker 1: game against the Islanders, there was a message sent, a

36:40 Speaker 1: message was received. You play hard, you buy in, you're

36:45 Speaker 1: going to earn your spot and likely keep it on

36:47 Speaker 1: this team. So to have Jonas make a second start

36:52 Speaker 1: in a row, Loria sits out the second game in

36:57 Speaker 1: a row, And I wonder if Marko thought that he

37:01 Speaker 1: might have inadvertently potentially started a little bit of a

37:04 Speaker 1: goalie controversy there, like, you know, what is the message

37:08 Speaker 1: that he's sending to me. The message was, listen, I'm

37:11 Speaker 1: going with the guys that I know are going to

37:15 Speaker 1: give me the best chance to win, which I think

37:17 Speaker 1: is a big part of a coach's job description.

37:22 Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, I thought it was great. I was surprised

37:27 Speaker 2: but not disappointed, just first from hearing it and then

37:31 Speaker 2: of course seeing it, and I think it did several things.

37:36 Speaker 2: One we heard from Corpusllo rightly, so he was disappointed

37:42 Speaker 2: that he wasn't given more opportunity in net, and he

37:47 Speaker 2: absolutely should have because last year he was better a

37:54 Speaker 2: lot of the time than Jeremy Swayman, and he should

37:57 Speaker 2: have been given the net several times based purely on performance,

38:04 Speaker 2: and he wasn't. So it was nice to see a

38:09 Speaker 2: coach recognizing that kind of to your point, if you're

38:13 Speaker 2: going to go either above and beyond or you're going

38:16 Speaker 2: to just make a huge difference. I'm going to recognize

38:18 Speaker 2: that and give you that chance. And that was good

38:22 Speaker 2: to see because that was a coach that keeps talking

38:27 Speaker 2: about not having guys buying in and being on board

38:30 Speaker 2: and blah blah blah, and then roll out the same

38:32 Speaker 2: lineup all the time.

38:33 Speaker 1: Right, put your money where your mouth. Just credits you

38:36 Speaker 1: in my view, Yeah, just credits you as a coach. Yeah,

38:40 Speaker 1: one hundred percent.

38:41 Speaker 2: And I think seeing him not repeat what I also

38:48 Speaker 2: thought was a pretty significant issue last year. And who knows,

38:53 Speaker 2: maybe the coaching staff last year didn't feel like they

38:58 Speaker 2: could do this, Like nobody got sat last year, with

39:03 Speaker 2: the exception of like that one time that pasta was set,

39:07 Speaker 2: nobody was. Freddy was never a healthy scratch. Corpusolo never

39:11 Speaker 2: got the net when.

39:11 Speaker 1: He earned it. It was it was, It was weird,

39:15 Speaker 1: and accountability was was very much lacking. Yeah year, And

39:20 Speaker 1: I don't know if again, the coaching staff felt like

39:23 Speaker 1: they were not in a position where they were allowed

39:26 Speaker 1: to who knows, But so I liked that he did

39:29 Speaker 1: it for that reason. I also liked it because it's

39:33 Speaker 1: been discussed out in the Ether, and admittedly so also

39:38 Speaker 1: by Swayman, that he thrives on competition. One of the

39:43 Speaker 1: reasons why he was so good when Linas Almark was

39:48 Speaker 1: there was because it was I think a genuine competition

39:54 Speaker 1: for the net in a respectful way, but a genuine

39:57 Speaker 1: competition that drove him to want to be better.

40:02 Speaker 2: And hopefully, if not necessarily there being a controversy, but

40:10 Speaker 2: building and developing a little bit more of competition between

40:14 Speaker 2: the two of them likely could serve as an excellent

40:17 Speaker 2: motivator for Jeremy Swayman. And I think that it paid

40:21 Speaker 2: dividends because by the time we saw him in net

40:24 Speaker 2: again against Carolina, he was perfection.

40:29 Speaker 1: So it did what it needed to do.

40:31 Speaker 2: And still to your larger point, it shows to it

40:35 Speaker 2: shows the team. I'm not, you know, bullshitting when I say,

40:40 Speaker 2: if you do what I need you to do and

40:43 Speaker 2: you work really hard, you are going to be rewarded

40:47 Speaker 2: simultaneously if you cannot get your shit together.

40:52 Speaker 1: And you continue to just like.

40:55 Speaker 2: Either ignore the plan or you're just not capable of

41:00 Speaker 2: executing on the plan. Because I'm thinking in this instance

41:03 Speaker 2: specifically of Mason Lowriight, I don't know, like is he

41:07 Speaker 2: just not getting it? Is he or is he just

41:09 Speaker 2: ignoring it? Then you're gonna get scratched because you are

41:13 Speaker 2: you are a liability and and we can't have that.

41:18 Speaker 2: So I was pleased on a number of fronts. I

41:22 Speaker 2: think it accomplished exactly what it needed to do. It

41:25 Speaker 2: made one goalie happy, rightly, so happy, fired up another goalie.

41:31 Speaker 2: We got what we needed out of him. It was

41:34 Speaker 2: it was perfect. It was exactly what we needed and

41:36 Speaker 2: he did a great job. You know, he's his corpusolo.

41:40 Speaker 2: Stats are somewhat misleading because yeah, they're not spectacular, but

41:47 Speaker 2: he's making key saves at points in the game that

41:51 Speaker 2: then have the potential to turn into opportunities that the

41:55 Speaker 2: Bruins then need to take advantage of. Whether or not

41:58 Speaker 2: they are that's a separate issue, but he is giving

42:01 Speaker 2: them a key moment save for this team to go

42:04 Speaker 2: and run with it.

42:05 Speaker 1: And that's I think competition is good, even in the house, right,

42:10 Speaker 1: it's never a bad thing to know there's someone that

42:14 Speaker 1: you have to look over your shoulder say, yes, this

42:18 Speaker 1: guy's help from my job, right, I want to keep

42:20 Speaker 1: my job.

42:21 Speaker 2: Yes, yes, absolutely absolutely, So I thought that was a

42:26 Speaker 2: great game in spite of you know, the penalties and everything.

42:33 Speaker 1: I mean, you know, we were creeping back up. That's gotta,

42:37 Speaker 1: that's gotta kind of yeah, that's still a bone of

42:41 Speaker 1: contention with me. However, you know, they pull out a

42:46 Speaker 1: win in overtime. Morgan Geeky extended his full streak to

42:51 Speaker 1: six games, to which Pasta said, you know, paraphrasing that

42:56 Speaker 1: he thinks Morgan can get fifty goals this year, which

42:59 Speaker 1: is coming from pass Bomber fact right, the.

43:04 Speaker 2: Fact that a Boston Bruin let alone Morgan Geeky, that

43:07 Speaker 2: it's not David Pasternak. The fact that a Boston Bruin

43:11 Speaker 2: is in the running right now. Granted it's the beginning

43:14 Speaker 2: of November. For you know, most goals is insane.

43:19 Speaker 1: It's insane. Have a three one lead in that game

43:23 Speaker 1: against Buffalo. They fought their way back in to tie

43:26 Speaker 1: the game. So here we go to overtime, and I thought, well,

43:31 Speaker 1: isn't this kind of weird in a scary way that

43:35 Speaker 1: Marco's got married in Stadina out on the ice. But

43:41 Speaker 1: the overtime with am Cryst lynch Holm thankfully and escapes

43:46 Speaker 1: me who the other guy was? Was it Fraser, Fraser

43:50 Speaker 1: Minton along with it, and you know, Fraser basically picks

43:55 Speaker 1: off a pass and those two boys are off to

43:59 Speaker 1: the and you could tell that Merret was thinking shot

44:05 Speaker 1: the entire way. And I'm so glad that he had

44:10 Speaker 1: that shoot mentality because it was a beautiful shot yep.

44:16 Speaker 1: And he beat Alex Lyon and he scored his first

44:21 Speaker 1: as a Bruin. Yeah, and his first was an OT winner. Yeah,

44:26 Speaker 1: and good for him, yeah, good for those guys and

44:29 Speaker 1: good you know again, I'm giving Marco some credit for

44:33 Speaker 1: having that that faith and confidence in those young guys.

44:40 Speaker 2: Yeah, and it worked out tremendously because you know, if

44:45 Speaker 2: they hadn't been able to pull it off, that would

44:47 Speaker 2: have really sucked, right, So obviously that this accomplishes so

44:53 Speaker 2: much because not only is he putting them that trust

44:56 Speaker 2: in them and they actually execute on what they needed

44:59 Speaker 2: to do. You've got young players new to the team,

45:03 Speaker 2: ish players talk about being able to get additional buy in.

45:07 Speaker 2: You know, he's still doing that kind of thing as

45:10 Speaker 2: a new coach. It's it's just a month in, he

45:12 Speaker 2: he It's not always a percent guarantee. Even if players say,

45:17 Speaker 2: like you know, upfront, yes of course I'm going to

45:19 Speaker 2: buy in, but deep down do they trust him?

45:23 Speaker 1: You know, that's not something you can just decide. You

45:26 Speaker 1: have to earn trust.

45:28 Speaker 2: And that just helped propel that relationship that he has

45:34 Speaker 2: with his players. That that just did so much more

45:37 Speaker 2: than win them a game. Really, and those and those

45:39 Speaker 2: guys earned that opportunity.

45:42 Speaker 1: They they have been working hard, playing hard, doing their

45:47 Speaker 1: job and doing their jobs right. So so credit to

45:51 Speaker 1: those guys. And then we have a game against the

45:56 Speaker 1: Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday afternoon, a matinee game against a

46:01 Speaker 1: very very good hockey team. Granted, no, they kind of

46:06 Speaker 1: lose their luster in the playoffs, it seems year after year.

46:10 Speaker 1: But they're always a boring there, I know. But they're

46:15 Speaker 1: a good, solid, strong hockey team. And typically the Bruins

46:22 Speaker 1: matinee games. We've had this conversation before about the fact

46:26 Speaker 1: that for some reason, staying have sleepy starts to matinee games. Yep,

46:32 Speaker 1: I was worried about that, knowing the opponent that was

46:35 Speaker 1: coming into the building, But that was not the case

46:39 Speaker 1: at all for the Bruins. They started off very aggressively.

46:45 Speaker 1: They they were physical, they maintained a great piece of

46:50 Speaker 1: play with the Carolina Hurricanes. Dare I say that was

46:55 Speaker 1: likely their most complete game of this early season, and

47:00 Speaker 1: that third period of hockey was some of the most entertaining,

47:05 Speaker 1: back and forth hockey I have seen this season.

47:09 Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree, and I had specifically brought this up

47:15 Speaker 2: in our snapshot preview of this game that to this

47:20 Speaker 2: point in the season, Carolina, you know they are an

47:22 Speaker 2: offensive powerhouse.

47:25 Speaker 1: They have averaged therefore, check is suffocating and relentless.

47:30 Speaker 2: They've averaged thirty three shots on goal over the course

47:34 Speaker 2: of I think it's like eleven games or something to

47:36 Speaker 2: that point.

47:37 Speaker 1: And you want to hear a fun facts, a little

47:40 Speaker 1: bit of a shocking fact. Apparently the Hurricanes have the

47:45 Speaker 1: worst power play percentage in the NHL right now. That's

47:49 Speaker 1: a surprise.

47:50 Speaker 2: That is a surprise they checking now because I did

47:55 Speaker 2: did the math on this, because this is how I

47:57 Speaker 2: figured out, obviously, how many the average shots on goal

48:01 Speaker 2: at this point, They've only out of eleven games, they've

48:06 Speaker 2: only gotten fewer than thirty shots on goal three times.

48:10 Speaker 2: Prior to this game, they were twenty seven, twenty eight,

48:14 Speaker 2: and twenty four shots on goal. The Bruins held them

48:17 Speaker 2: to under thirty shots on goal, They had twenty nine

48:20 Speaker 2: shots on goal.

48:21 Speaker 1: Well, and so again this speaks to that defensive structure, right,

48:24 Speaker 1: this is what we've been I think we saw in

48:27 Speaker 1: this game against Carolina what that structure is supposed to

48:33 Speaker 1: look like when you play from start to finish in

48:38 Speaker 1: that matter. Yeah, well, and I bring this.

48:41 Speaker 2: Up also to say because again people might might be thinking, well,

48:48 Speaker 2: you know, the Bruins were playing against a defensively decimated

48:54 Speaker 2: Carolina Hurricanes team.

48:56 Speaker 1: So you know, of course, what do you expect. They

48:59 Speaker 1: had it easier than a team maybe a couple of

49:02 Speaker 1: weeks ago would have had because you know, they were

49:04 Speaker 1: out without.

49:05 Speaker 2: Slaven gostas Bear and KeAndre Miller, so they were missing

49:09 Speaker 2: some big players there. Shockingly, Seth Jarvis played. I certainly

49:14 Speaker 2: didn't think he was going to because he took a

49:16 Speaker 2: shot to the foot like the day or two before. Yes,

49:21 Speaker 2: but the fact that when we're looking at just the

49:26 Speaker 2: shots on goal, the fact that the Bruins held them

49:31 Speaker 2: to twenty nine shots on goal tells me that it

49:36 Speaker 2: was truly the Bruins being the reason they won, and

49:41 Speaker 2: not the reason they won was because Carolina was easier

49:45 Speaker 2: to play against, because they still only got twenty two

49:51 Speaker 2: shots on goal against Carolina.

49:55 Speaker 1: So clearly they were.

49:58 Speaker 2: Still doing their job offensively. Their goaltender was still doing

50:01 Speaker 2: his job defensively. So I think genuinely it wasn't just

50:07 Speaker 2: a full sixty minute effort. They were good, like objectively good.
