1:58 Speaker 4: Indeed, indeed, it's hopefully a very big week for the Bruins.

2:08 Speaker 4: a religious follower of thirty two thoughts to stay in the.

2:17 Speaker 4: And per one of my favorite sources at Friedman from

2:22 Speaker 4: this week's podcast, that the Bruins are down to their

2:27 Speaker 4: final two candidates and Joe Saco is not one of them,

2:33 Speaker 4: and there is some speculation that possibly, possibly he will

2:39 Speaker 4: end up in Toronto to take the place of Lambert

2:45 Speaker 4: who went out to Seattle. So a little bit of

2:47 Speaker 4: shuffling around. Hopefully what we see is part of a

2:53 Speaker 4: trend of maybe some new coaches that are coming in,

2:58 Speaker 4: some fresh blood because this league certainly needs it well.

3:02 Speaker 5: That will be a big tell for me and as it,

3:05 Speaker 5: as Caroline just mentioned, the hope is that early this

3:09 Speaker 5: week now, early this week means a variety of different

3:12 Speaker 5: things to different people. I'm thinking Wednesday at the latest,

3:17 Speaker 5: even though one might refer to that as midweek But

3:21 Speaker 5: the big tell for me will be whether or not

3:25 Speaker 5: whoever is offered and accepts the job will have the

3:30 Speaker 5: flexibility and the ability to choose his or her own

3:34 Speaker 5: coaching staff, because if that's not the case, if that

3:39 Speaker 5: is not the case, I would I would have some concerns.

3:44 Speaker 2: Yep. There, I would have some concerns there.

3:49 Speaker 5: And I'm hoping that it's somebody who and I understand

3:55 Speaker 5: about wanting to work with someone who brings familiararity to

4:00 Speaker 5: the organization.

4:01 Speaker 2: But don't we have enough of that already?

4:04 Speaker 5: And I'm referring to one of the candidates whose name

4:08 Speaker 5: has been thrown around, which is Marco Stern. But again,

4:13 Speaker 5: we already have so many other former Bruins already in

4:20 Speaker 5: the house, so to speak.

4:22 Speaker 2: But I don't know. Maybe they know better than I do.

4:25 Speaker 4: Yep, exactly exactly, So we shall see. There's also been

4:32 Speaker 4: some I guess i'll call it a rumor because of course,

4:35 Speaker 4: until it's been confirmed by the organization, we have to

4:39 Speaker 4: kind of make that assumption.

4:41 Speaker 2: But there's also been talk that.

4:46 Speaker 4: Chris Kelly and the Bruins skating coach have both also

4:52 Speaker 4: been relieved if they're their responsibilities.

4:55 Speaker 5: So but again it hasn't been officially confirmed, yes, by anyone,

5:00 Speaker 5: But I think that confirmation will come when you name

5:04 Speaker 5: a head coach and that head coach names a new

5:08 Speaker 5: coaching staff right.

5:10 Speaker 2: First, open by audition, by subtraction.

5:14 Speaker 5: At this point in time, and you know, we do

5:18 Speaker 5: know that Zadan o'chara will be involved with the organization

5:23 Speaker 5: this season in some capacity. I also thought I read

5:27 Speaker 5: somewhere that perhaps Patreece Bergeron was going to have some

5:33 Speaker 5: involvement in the organization in the upcoming season.

5:39 Speaker 2: But we shall see, we shall see.

5:41 Speaker 5: In the meantime, not only are we waiting with baited

5:44 Speaker 5: breath for this announcement, we're waiting what seems to be

5:50 Speaker 5: an eternity for Game one of the Stanley Cup Finals,

5:54 Speaker 5: the start on Wednesday night. And I've seen it and

5:58 Speaker 5: I've heard it in many places on the social media,

6:02 Speaker 5: is about this is crazy that the hockey season is

6:07 Speaker 5: extending this far, at this point, It's it's crazy, and

6:12 Speaker 5: the players must be, yes, chomping at the bit to

6:17 Speaker 5: get going here.

6:18 Speaker 4: Yes, everything that I've seen online from reputable sources, you know,

6:23 Speaker 4: indicates that players certainly would prefer not to wait.

6:28 Speaker 2: This amount of time.

6:32 Speaker 4: And you know, I posed a question on social media,

6:36 Speaker 4: although apparently most folks didn't really understand my question. But

6:41 Speaker 4: I swear I remember watching, you know, religiously hockey when

6:48 Speaker 4: I was in high school and in college, you know,

6:51 Speaker 4: And this was twenty five years ago. I do not

6:56 Speaker 4: remember there being this kind of a gap at all.

7:00 Speaker 4: But then again, when you're younger, your concept of time

7:04 Speaker 4: passing is very different, you know. So I posted about

7:09 Speaker 4: pet online and everyone's like, well, they have to wait,

7:11 Speaker 4: because if there were games, I understand why they do

7:14 Speaker 4: it today.

7:15 Speaker 2: I get it, I understand. I don't remember it being

7:18 Speaker 2: like this pre COVID.

7:20 Speaker 5: Yeah, this seems like an interminably long and period of time.

7:25 Speaker 5: And the other thing is now you're going to be

7:28 Speaker 5: potentially conflicting with NBA games as well. But I will

7:35 Speaker 5: say I am so glad that the broadcasts of these

7:39 Speaker 5: games is going to be on TNT and not the

7:43 Speaker 5: ESPN PLATUF, thank god, just for a variety of reasons,

7:48 Speaker 5: none not the least of which is that the broadcasts

9:50 Speaker 5: each assist, and to date he has donated four hundred

9:55 Speaker 5: and twenty thousand dollars to a local children's hospital to

10:05 Speaker 5: say a lot of things about the Florida Panthers.

10:09 Speaker 5: And Sam Bennett, but Alexander Barkov is a class act.

10:18 Speaker 5: the team. You can see why he's won He's won

10:25 Speaker 5: his career, so you know, and now he may have

14:47 Speaker 5: part of the trade of Charlie Cooyle to the Colorado Avalanche.

14:53 Speaker 5: In addition to Casemiddlestat, the Bruins got back a player

14:57 Speaker 5: named Will Zellers and a twenty twenty five second round

15:05 Speaker 5: draft pick. Now, Casey came to the Bruins with some

15:11 Speaker 5: term left on his contract. I believe he has one

15:16 Speaker 5: more year left at five point seventy five million dollars,

15:20 Speaker 5: which I think is making perhaps some people bristle a

15:26 Speaker 5: little bit in terms of, you know, some we I mean,

15:29 Speaker 5: let's face facts, You've got some serious roster rebuilding and

15:35 Speaker 5: roster reconstruction to do here, and you know, Casey Middlestat

15:43 Speaker 5: has been talked about as perhaps being a viable trade

15:50 Speaker 5: candidate if the Bruins wanted to seek something bigger and

15:56 Speaker 5: better in order to do this rebuild a little bit

16:02 Speaker 5: quicker than many of us may be anticipating. I don't

16:05 Speaker 5: think there's a lot of appetite for, you know, a

16:09 Speaker 5: three four five year rebuilt at this point. So you know,

16:15 Speaker 5: what what do you do with a player of casey

16:21 Speaker 5: mental stats, stature, He's he's young, He's he's only twenty

16:27 Speaker 5: six years old.

16:29 Speaker 2: He's a left handed center.

16:32 Speaker 5: He was drafted eighth overall in the twenty seventeen Entry Draft.

16:39 Speaker 5: He played eighty one games last season. They weren't all

16:41 Speaker 5: with the Bruins because he had time with the Avalanche.

16:46 Speaker 5: Fifteen goals, twenty five assists for a total of forty points.

16:51 Speaker 2: But the stat that I your favorite lat My, and

16:59 Speaker 2: I know he's a minus twenty nine.

17:03 Speaker 5: Yeah, and the struggle, the struggle was real for him

17:07 Speaker 5: during his games with the Bruins.

17:11 Speaker 2: I myself.

17:14 Speaker 5: Didn't see enough to excite me in.

17:19 Speaker 2: The fact that, you know, we brought this player in.

17:22 Speaker 5: Now, maybe it was more the fact that you know,

17:24 Speaker 5: you got a draft pick, you were able to move

17:28 Speaker 5: Charlie Coyle. But you're on the books for this five

17:33 Speaker 5: point seventy five million dollar salary for one more year.

17:39 Speaker 5: So I don't know, And and I know there were

17:43 Speaker 5: some you know again, Don and either Don or Cam

17:48 Speaker 5: might have made some comments about not having a shoot

17:52 Speaker 5: first mentality.

17:54 Speaker 2: But this is the same you see.

17:56 Speaker 5: The enterment group that at one point said we want

18:00 Speaker 5: quality over well your your quick to point the finger

18:05 Speaker 5: at at a player and said players seemed you know,

18:09 Speaker 5: a little bit confused by that.

18:12 Speaker 2: That comment.

18:13 Speaker 5: And you know this might also speak to hopefully when

18:17 Speaker 5: a new coach comes in, there'll be a new structure

18:22 Speaker 5: or an improved offensive structure put in that might benefit

18:28 Speaker 5: a young player like Casey middle Staff, because let's face fat,

18:32 Speaker 5: our young players have not not benefited or grown in

18:41 Speaker 5: Ruin's current structure. So your your thoughts on on on

18:46 Speaker 5: on Casey, Yeah, I think so.

18:51 Speaker 4: The I know your favorite statistic is uh the plus

18:56 Speaker 4: minus and certainly uh, I like others.

19:03 Speaker 5: I know there are others, but that's it's a it's

19:06 Speaker 5: a little bit of a scary number.

19:08 Speaker 4: Yeah, So, I mean, certainly it's a statistic that I

19:12 Speaker 4: go to one of the first ones that I go to.

19:16 Speaker 4: Either you know, there there are some fairly simple metrics

19:20 Speaker 4: out there that exist, either in a game or for

19:24 Speaker 4: a player, that I think can tell you a lot

19:29 Speaker 4: right away, right, that's what's great about them.

19:31 Speaker 2: So, like folks who are part of our discord group.

19:34 Speaker 4: Know that I have a reliance on always checking, you know,

19:39 Speaker 4: shots on goal in a game. Shots on goal isn't

19:42 Speaker 4: like you know, the end all be all that can

19:44 Speaker 4: tell you everything about a game. But if you know

19:47 Speaker 4: how a team plays and you then see how they

19:50 Speaker 4: are doing with the shots on goal. It can often

19:53 Speaker 4: tell me right away what kind of game that team

19:57 Speaker 4: is having. Right for example, in the playoffs, watching the

20:04 Speaker 4: Florida Panthers in Game five, I believe five was it

20:12 Speaker 4: where they lost for six? I don't remember now where

20:15 Speaker 4: they lost against Toronto. It may have been six. Yeah,

20:20 Speaker 4: it was six, because they were This is a team

20:26 Speaker 4: that not just smothers defensively, but they are also very

20:31 Speaker 4: aggressive offensively. And so for that game, the fact that

20:34 Speaker 4: they were kind of behind the eight ball on the

20:36 Speaker 4: shots on goal told me everything that I like confirmed

20:39 Speaker 4: everything that I was kind of experiencing watching the game, like, Okay,

20:43 Speaker 4: they're probably gonna lose this. They the same exact thing

20:45 Speaker 4: happened when they lost the one game to Carolina, right.

20:48 Speaker 4: So that's kind of like a quick and dirty stat metric.

20:52 Speaker 4: And plus minus also has a lot of value in

20:57 Speaker 4: that sense as well, because if I see a player

21:00 Speaker 4: independent of all other players have a minus twenty nine,

21:04 Speaker 4: whoa boy, what is wrong with that player? And then

21:07 Speaker 4: you look at the whole team, and when they are

21:10 Speaker 4: on a team like the Boston Bruins, where so many

21:15 Speaker 4: of those players this season were in the red for

21:20 Speaker 4: plus minus. I'm a little more forgiving of that horrible

21:24 Speaker 4: stat because all of like not all of the players,

21:28 Speaker 4: but a lot of players had really bad plus minus.

21:32 Speaker 4: So it tells me something a little different that it

21:35 Speaker 4: was more of a global issue, if you will, as

21:39 Speaker 4: opposed to you know, him being the problem, right, I mean,

21:44 Speaker 4: look at Mason lore who we will talk about this

21:48 Speaker 4: summer certainly in detail. My favorite stats to look at

21:53 Speaker 4: when I want to look a little bit more deeply

21:56 Speaker 4: into okay, is what does this player have to bring

22:00 Speaker 4: to the table that might not be quite so obvious.

22:04 Speaker 4: And my two favorite ones have been individual points percentage,

22:09 Speaker 4: So that's an IPP and then player usage. So if

22:13 Speaker 4: you follow us on substack, you've seen a couple of

22:16 Speaker 4: times I've talked about player usage and IPP.

22:21 Speaker 2: And essentially.

22:24 Speaker 4: When it comes to individual points percentage, it's looking at

22:29 Speaker 4: the team goals that occur when the player is on

22:32 Speaker 4: the ice. So if a player is on the ice

22:36 Speaker 4: for ten team goals and they had a hand in that,

22:40 Speaker 4: so they had at least a point goal or assist

22:43 Speaker 4: on six of them, then you're looking at sixty percent

22:46 Speaker 4: high IPP. So you're looking at for offensive players forwards

22:52 Speaker 4: of you know, a seventy eighty percent means that that

22:56 Speaker 4: particular player is extremely uh heavily involved in you know,

23:03 Speaker 4: the offensive.

23:06 Speaker 2: Game.

23:07 Speaker 4: So David Posternoch, for example, this past season, he had

23:10 Speaker 4: an eighty eight point three ipp right, duh.

23:15 Speaker 2: He was there saying he was our goal leader.

23:18 Speaker 4: So interestingly enough, for Casey Middlestaff, he had a sixty.

23:27 Speaker 4: So that's not terrible. And you know, I don't know,

23:34 Speaker 4: obviously the finer details and the nuances of what was

23:38 Speaker 4: happening on that Colorado team, because keep in mind he

23:41 Speaker 4: was he played about sixty games in Colorado and then

23:46 Speaker 4: twenty games in Boston, and you have to remember again

23:50 Speaker 4: those twenty games can be not necessarily a good representation

23:56 Speaker 4: of who that player is. Obviously, there's a lot that

23:59 Speaker 4: happens trade deadline.

24:02 Speaker 2: But one statistic that I like to look at that

24:06 Speaker 2: kind of evaluates both you know.

24:14 Speaker 4: What the what maybe the coaching staff thinks of a

24:17 Speaker 4: player or you know, you can draw kind of your

24:20 Speaker 4: own conclusions, is the player usage. And so this particular

24:24 Speaker 4: statistic compares a player their time on ice essentially most

24:33 Speaker 4: simply to forwards on their team defenceman on their team

24:41 Speaker 4: forwards across the league and defenseman across the league. So

24:46 Speaker 4: where do they land in terms of how frequently they're

24:50 Speaker 4: used on their actual team? So how are they contributing

24:54 Speaker 4: to the team itself? And then are they being used

24:57 Speaker 4: in a way you know similarly across other teams. You know,

25:02 Speaker 4: you can look at by their age, by their position,

25:06 Speaker 4: you know, by the divisions, you can kind of compare

25:08 Speaker 4: them to other players. And Casey Middlestat actually played a

25:15 Speaker 4: lot of tough minutes. He was used actually quite a bit.

25:20 Speaker 4: Comparing him to Charlie Coyle. If we're gonna we're gonna say, okay,

25:24 Speaker 4: we sent Charlie Coyle packing, we replaced him with Casey Middlestack.

25:30 Speaker 4: Not really a bad trade off, quite frankly, because you know,

25:37 Speaker 4: Charlie Coyle, he played eighty three games, He had seventeen goals,

25:41 Speaker 4: eighteen assists for thirty five points. Again, you you mentioned
